    Default Dolphins In Liverpool Bay.

Remember during our seagoing days we would come home and tell our shoreside friends about seeing dolphins and porpoise now they can see them on their doorstep.
    Regards.

In 2007 I was stuck in Eastham lock with a porpoise. Had to sit in the lock for ages whilst the canal company tried to persuade it to leave the lock. It eventually swam out of its own accord and they were able to shut the gates.

Used to love watching them Jim, especially when they used to play around the bow as the ship was underway. Funny how this post has brought back memories. It was whilst I was Third Mate on the 8 - 12 evening watch, we used to have our lookouts on the bridge wing and on this occasion it was a beautiful night, dark but with an almost full moon and clear sky. The celestial dome of stars was brilliant and an amazing sight. We were bowling along at about 17 knots with a slight chop on the waves and the phosphorescence was the best I had ever seen. Not another ship in sight and I was at peace with the world. This peace was suddenly shattered completely by a shout of " TORPEDO ON THE STARBOARD BOW " - what , what, a torpedo, I rushed to the starboard wing of the bridge were the lookout was, just in time to see a white phosphorescent track shoot straight across and under the bow. To say I was shocked was to put it mildly - the lookout an elderly AB was shaking badly and in very upset state. There had been no bang nor clang even, so I was sure it was no torpedo, suddenly there was another one coming from the same direction, which again shot under the bow " Dolphins " a voice behind me said, " just Dolphins ". It was the Old Man who had heard the shout and come up. He was very kind and comforting with the AB and I quickly arranged for him to go below and to be taken off watch for the rest of the watch. It turned out that he had been torpedoed twice during WW2 as a young deckhand and had in fact seen the torpedo approaching the ship on the first occasion. The site of the dolphin shooting towards our bow with the phosphorescent track had taken him back to the war and he had reacted accordingly. He apologised to me the following day, I told him that no apology was needed whatsoever and that I felt honoured to have him on my watch and as a shipmate, which I really was. We often yarned after that and he told me a little about his life at sea during the war but he never mentioned his torpedoing and I never asked about it either.

Possible reason ,well not possible reason I will stick my neck out and say they are feeding !!! but the reason there are likely to be so many of them is they are chasing these fellas untitled.jpg seem to remember this is when the Mackerel are rounding the British Coast.

Not much walking about, Doc ! Small ship ( 103 passengers. 354 ft overall) so we got into plenty of small fjords. Whales, dolphins, sea otters and so many glaciers and wonderful physical geography features, from Vancouver to Seeward. My dear Mum would have loved it. A brilliant geography teacher who never left the British isles....... so I'm doing a bit of research for her ! Also spent 2 weeks in Oregon with my American friend of 67 years. Never stopped talking. That's not like me !!!
    Still nice to be home.
    Regards

Brings back memories I remember one night when we were going into the anchorage at Port Elizabeth and i was sent forrad to drop the pick and, when I looked over the bow there was a school of dolphins crisscrossing the bow, lit up by green phosphorescence. Wonderful sight.
