Butchers cabin

In 64 I joined the NZSC 'Paparoa'.
She was a 10,008 cargo ship with accommodation for about 8 bloods.
Built in 1943 she was the third ship with that name in NZSC.

A crew of about 52 with deck crew two to a cabin, or worse, but all catering were in single cabins.

I was allocated the cabin which over the door had a name, Butcher.

I assume then at some time in her history there had been one on board, I have never heard of a specialized butcher on any ship other than this, though I do know some cooks were close to murderers.

I was looking the other day at some old photos of her and a few other ships I sailed on, a bit faded now, but it can be clearly seen that she had a one color funnel. Tan if I recall.

Went on to the net to find a photo of her and the one I found showed her with the NZSC logo on her funnel.
Obviously at some time it was changed.

Why would this be done and any idea when?

I was in New Zealand in 1954/55 and Federal Steam was Federal Steam then at least, as one of their ships was in Bluff at the same time as us. They wore if remember correctly epaulettes on their blues and not on their sleeves. JWS.

I remember reading an article on the FSNco flag a few years ago, if I remember right the flag started off in the 1800s as a white background with a red cross, the company was ordered to change the flag to avoid confusion with the RN flag
it was expected to be done there and then so a square patch of blue cloth was sewn into the centre of the flag to keep them
happy, it was a long time ago so that's only as I remember it, for me the NZSco was the best company I sailed with.
PS, The NZSco house flag was, white background with a red cross and in each corner in blue was the letters N Z S co ,
For me the NZSco was the best I sailed with, ORARI had a crew of about 65 and she had a butcher, baker, cook 2cnd cook

Hi John. I can't help with the "butcher" question but your mention of the Paparoa brought this back to mind. We were laid up in the Blackwater River on the Iberic along with her. Both anchors down and the chains shackled. A great time was had by all, swimming in the river next to Bradwell Nuclear Power Station the cooling water flowing back into the river!! In the evening each ship took turns to provide a liberty boat to sail to West Mersea the only pub around. This went well till one Friday night when the Paparoa's life boat, she had four 27 man boats was the last one back. there was about forty plus blokes trying to get on board with the 3rd Mate going mental, when he had sorted it out those left ashore had to book into the pub/hotel for the night.
I found this article and put it together with a photo in my scrap book. I did a similar one for the Iberic.
