#20. Hi David you are asking the wrong person asking Brian who he believes in especially if you were expecting an answer like “ I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the Resurrection of the body Aaaaamen”. I would second his choice of the Easter bunny cheers JS

I still think it is very possible to believe in a deity without believing in the very expensive hierarchical structure of the church and as it comes to what the hell do you believe in I did this quite a few people been to that hell on Earth

Yes Vernon, kit was a lot easier back then in 1980 to get into Oz.
We were lucky, my brother in law here had a good friend as bank manager of an Oz bank in London.
We went to see him and he did all the paper work, one meeting with officials in Oz house London and we were in like flint.
Mind you we did have two pubs to sell along with a restaurant and arrived with enough to buy our first house outright.
No cost to us and at that time no sponsorship, that came in under Howard in about 1993.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Commodore of Shaw Savill fleet, Master of the the SS 'Gothic', Arthur Vernon Richardson had been thwarted from the honour of completing the voyage of the Royal World Tour in 1952. On the return of three further voyages to Australia and New Zealand it was announced that he was retiring.

Joining the 'Gothic' in January 1951 as Captain's Steward, it was a pleasant change to serve this new master; the complete opposite to his predecessor who had just retired. Not knowing what his replacement would be like I decided to start a new life and as I had been to Halifax, Nova Scotia on my first trip, that I would go to Toronto to where my Yorkshire Uncle George had immigrated after he was demobbed from the British Army at the end of WWI.

Arriving in Liverpool in March 1953 I told Captain Richardson my plans and said that I understood that it was not the norm but would he give me a reference. He thought about it briefly, agreed that it wasn't usual but sat down and wrote a brief note to say I was sober and would recommend my services.

In London I applied at the Canadian High Commission to immigrate to Canada and was accepted. A friend at Australia House organised a passage on the 'Queen Elizabeth' to New York where I had called at Hoboken on my first trip in 1947. From New York I caught the train to Toronto.

My Uncle George and Aunt Marie put me up until I had got myself sorted out and meanwhile I had answered an advert in the Toronto Globe and Mail where the (Canadian) Western Assurance Company were looking for someone for their Automobile Department. I thought that would be great working with cars and it wasn't until the interview that I discovered it was sitting in an office changing C$ premiums to binary code for the punch-cards used in their enormous computer. I got the job and spent fifty years in the insurance industry culminating as vice president of an Asian insurance group.

During the two and a half years I lived in Toronto I fell for a colleague in the Marine Department and became engaged. My job was somewhat monotonous and I felt that I would be able to make a better go of it back home in Australia. I put this to my then fiance and it was not long before her eldest brother who lived in Ottawa invited us to visit his family in Ottawa over Easter 1955. The upshot was that he did not think that his 'little' sister should leave Canada and the engagement was terminated.

The following September I had arranged to collect a Ford automobile from Detroit for delivery to Los Angeles. I am presently scanning the many photos I took on my journey across the USA mostly on Route 66 and this will feature in my A Journey Through Life I have been working on for some time. I've just got to keep taking my pills!!

#32... Rob don’t get me wrong, I am no strong Christian person whose faith keeps him alive. But when I was certain I was going to die within the next couple of seconds my thoughts were immediately on who could help, I made a deal if you can call it that and hope it wasn’t the devil I was dealing with, in short the thought words were God if I come out of this alive, I will never be frightened of dying again. Unfortuanetley 8 other people I believe died instead which I will always have a guilt complex about. That was nearly 30 years ago and I thank whoever it was that saved me for those extra 30 years. I, believe it or not am not afraid of dying strange as that sounds, but would like to go when I was asleep and miss the gory details. I do believe in a superior being sorry Cappy it’s not you or Mary although hard to think of her as a virgin. Especially after what Rob told me. Cheers JWS..

Reading what you have to say about the benefits system Cappy , a lot of people to claim the personal independence payment have to go for an interview on a face-to-face basis with one of two companies either ATOS or capita . What are the greatest problems , well when they qualified medical professional who has had 5 weeks training at filling in the forms for you and assessing you asks I genuinely disable person if they can try and walk , pride takes over and they try their best and end up losing their benefit those that you have described above have been well coached by their peer group and they know all the pitfalls. I believe it was JP who told me that I'm going for one of these interviews but it was on the second floor with no lift so by the time you got to the office you are already passed the physical and lost the benefit I'm not saying that they deliberately crafty but I wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw them I firmly believe they're trying to get you off the benefit and unfortunately the genuine ones work with them to show how well they have progressed

###in my view again rob its all down to the pollies frightened to lose votes ..the true shirkers and god knows there are enough of them could be outed very quickly ..if the need was desperate enough ..but no it is the man who goes out ill or well summer or winter day after day to keep the bums and stiffs in a living state which after benefits the bums are not far behind the poor worker....valhalla on earth...cappy

I came to the conclusion, many years ago, that if I was to believe all that the polis tell me then by now I would be a multi millionaire living the life of Riley.

The 'pork barreling' that goes on during election time would make some of the greatest fairy stories look very mundane.
Obviously if you are capable of telling the truth then you will automatically be barred from standing.
