All of our generation knew that story from being children. Thought it would of been handed down generation to generation. I passed it on to mine. Maybe today they are too busy with a mobile clagged to their ear perhaps or think that Google is a wise old man, instead of a collector of newspaper cuttings of doubtful origin and so called colourful information. Thanks Fouro for going to the trouble of finding the official story for the many in the world who probably now are a bit wiser. Cheers JWS.

The same story circulates in and around Greenock. The people of Port Glasgow convinced the Greenockian's that the monkey was a French spy.
