Keith I seem to remember a concept that was to be developed by a company called Walker? the Walker wing? sail, just googled it but nothing came up.
There is a company considering running from Bordeaux to Dublin with a sailing ship obviously carrying wine. Let's face it wind is free and if there is no real rush for a package type cargo to be delivered asap, why not, also think of how many lorries it would pull off the roads.
Is this perhaps what you were looking for Lew!????
WINGSAILS, WALKER WINGSAIL SYSTEM, WING and ROTARY WING BOATS
Here we go Lewis, some of the brain cells have survived, i knew it was on Yachts, but recall experiment for cargo ships, kt

I was a Share Holder in Walker Wingsail, lost a fair bit of money when it went into liquidation. I still have all the documentation of the "take over" and her suicide.
A Cartel of American Shareholders held it all to ransom and so that was the end,
Mrs Jean Walker Committed Suicide over it, sad, I had got to know her quite well.
The Wingsail was a Success, both on Ships with big savings on fuel and on sail boats,. that could sail in any direction against the wind, Ity was all run off a computer, and could sail a straight course against the wind, No Tacking,

Shame they did away with trams, could do with them now.
They have a New fleet of Trams from Blackpool to Fleetwood, each one Cost over Two Million Pounds each. built in Germany.
4.4.1 Training, competence and automation Crew training and competence are vitally important, regardless of the degree of automation or ‘intelligence’ built into a wind-assisted propulsion system. The crew must be able to respond in the event of an emergency, and manually override the system if necessary.
While performance can be optimised automatically under normal operation, the ship’s master may also be able to achieve better performance by applying their ‘sailing skills’ and interpreting routeing and weather information. This is no different than the operation of conventionally-powered ships where, despite the advances in information systems and technology, ship operators often report significant differences in the fuel consumption of sister vessels, which they attribute to masters’ competence.
Trams surely several cities in the UK operate trams, Manchester , Nottingham & surely Edinburgh have trams up and running?Liverpool was to have a tram system built and a lot of the work had been put in place but sadly Gordon Brown pulled the funding.
Work well elsewhere: Amsterdam ETC.
One of the most popular parts of Amsterdam's public transport network is the city's reliable and frequent tram service.
The network dates back to 1875.
The Lisbon tramway network serves the municipality of Lisbon, capital city of Portugal. In operation since 1873, it presently comprises five urban lines.
