Read about the women who were called upon to build the bridge.

It is only in recent years the memorial to the women of WW2 was put up in Whitehall.
The females did so much for the war effort but got very little recognition.

Read about this remarkable heroine who was French.
During WW 2 she set up the women's industrial war work programme for Lord Nuffield and ran 13 factories.

    Hi Fouro.
We have been watching the tunneling for the new underground rail line in London, I wonder in years to come whether the women engineers will be cut out of the scenes.

Doubt it Des, but have a nephew there who works for London Transport.
In June he showed me an update of the project, expected to come in up to 6 months ahead of time and about 10% under budget.
They work 24/7 on rolling shifts all for the same hourly rate, no unions there, and has caused little disruption to normal life.

    Hello Des,
According to tunnelling tradition, boring machines can't be put to use until they are given a name. In this case, the two gigantic French built machines being used in the programme which has interested you recently, were named by local school children.
They named one Helen, in honour of Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut, and they named the other Amy, in honour of Amy Johnson the British aviation pioneer.
I'm rather surprised that present day school chidren have ventured into the past in order to select Amy Johnson's name for one of the machines.
Now the names Helen and Amy can be added to the Heroines already in the thread.

    Fouro.
