##14, how could anyone forget where the Navigators den was? And it was never a pub, you took your own Cape Smoke there, and paid for the Coke a cola

Re: Sixty Years Ago.
1958 I flew (or tried) from peace river in alberta to great lake in northwest territories to join a rig.We had to de-ice the plane first with alchohol and when it was finished the pilot decided that there was a weather problem and we would try the following day.He insisted that I go to the local store and buy some long underwear and if I wasn't wearing it he wouldn't take me up.He reckoned that if we had to make a forced landing in the bush that I wouldn't last more than a few hours without it.Following day we tried again after once more de-icing and after an hour we turned back as the weather ahead looked rough. In those days the bush planes navigated by following the roads and if you couldn't see the road you were lost.
Went by car in the end and it took 2 days.It was my first experience of sharing a bed with a bloke. There were 3 of us and the motel room only had one bed . this was not an unusual practice when moving around the oilfields in those days

Joining my first ship in 1966. Southend to Dunkirk. Bristol Superfreighter, 12 passengers tucked in the rear. I never experienced an engine room as noisy, thankfully it was a very short flight.

Now all gone Bill sorry to say.
But what wonderful places at the time, half a bottle of Brandy in your pocket and into the Navigators or Catacombs for a great night.
There is a song, 'Like Desperados waiting for a train'. Always reminds me of the Tiki Hoc bar.

Happy daze John in Oz.
