    Default Sixty Years Ago.

In nineteen fifty seven I flew as a passenger on a Lockheed Super Constellation airliner.
Being curious, can any of you boast of having had the same "privilege"?.

    Fouro.

I can't personally, but my Mother-in-law can, she flew on a broomstick more than sixty years ago

At that time fouro the best I could do was an old Dakota used for transporting crews from Newcastle Airfield and it was literally a field To and from Hamburg. Cheers JWS

Not quite 60 Years but 57 Years ago I had the privilege to Fly in a Hawker Hunter of the RAF
It was a lucky one ,but I had a very good Uncle who was Wing Commander and he pulled a few strings for me!
That was awesome to say the least!
Wish I could do that again!
    Cheers

Doc for my 70th birthday in 2007, I flew in a tiger moth and although the real pilot was in the after cockpit a replica set of controls was also in the front as well, just the basic needs for that vintage of 80 knot aircraft. If had been out here at a younger age would have gone for a pilots licence as many did. Even taking my Australian driving licence the cop who took me was as much interested in asking me questions about short wave radio transmissions as was going for a pilots licence. On coming back to the depot I had to ask him if I had passed the driving test or not, his remarks just signed the paper and said hand this in at the desk, he was away in a world of his own. Hope he passed as well. JWS

I was in Venezuela on its first flight to show it off to the world. Think it was Maracaibo and caused a stir in the newspapers there. How close to the time era did you fly on it Marian before it crashed at beleive Orleans airport in Paris. JWS

We flew from Hong Kong on a Dakota, covered in camouflage , Owner Driver, to London, took Three and a Half Days. iron bucket seats, no cushions. no toilet. calling at Calcutta, Bombay , Bahrain, Athens, Frankfurt. Stanstead.
after taking the GOOD HOPE CASTLE to the breakers in Hong Kong in June 1959. flew most of the way on one engine as the starboard one was on fire and spewing oil.
The big Texan driver just said, "Waal I guess that baby don't like oil no more.",

My best flying was three months on assignment flying in Helicopters with Court Helicopters of Cape Town.
I wrote the story on here. Very exciting.
    Cheers
    Brian.

Sadly reminds me of the Son of a very good Work Colleague who was killed in a Runway Collision between two Aircraft in Madrid Spain in I think was 1983
I was working at Union Flour Mills Umbilo Road Durban as the Production Manager and it was about three Years after we came to live in Aussie that I actually saw the News Flash and recognised what and who it was immediately. I picked up the phone and phoned John in Durban and told him what I had seen and heard .I have never known a man break down so badly!
His Son Marc Raubenheimer who had become a reknown Pianist had been killed in that Disaster!
I had known Marc from a young age and his Dad and me were great Buddies!
    So very very sad!
    Never forget that tragedy!
