    Hi Rod.
If you didn't like the country you have adopted you would have left, so I guess you liked what you saw and stayed good on yea.
I will say one thing, read President Roosevelt's biography where he states that he wanted America to have all that Britain possessed at the end of the 2nd world war, and he got most of it . Britain like all world powers eventually couldn't hang on to what she had, politicians made sure of that, they abandoned the Commonwealth, thinking that tying in with Europe would be better, we have all seen the result of that ; no use crying; spilt milk comes to mind.
    Cheers Des

Rodders, your manuscript is excellent reading and shows how good any place can be if you look for the good parts.

When in Oz you no doubt came across the occasional whinger, they grow in number every day. But those who have travelled as we all have, or those who have taken a year out to see other countries return saying Oz is the best.

Like so many others I left UK twice, going to sea as a young lad of some 16 years, and then coming here to Oz. I have been back to UK, 2013 was the first time for some 18 years and the shock was some shock at what I saw.

Those who go to another country and attempt to change the rules to suit them should stay away, we can all sit back and criticize another country but until you have lived there you have no right to do so.

All countries have their own special attributes, some good some not so good but if USA wants to call itself the greatest nation that is fine, they are entitled to their opinion.

Stay proud of the country you pay tax to, but also remember where you came from.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Ref. Fouros post on a tank soldier. Reminds me of a man in the town I emigrated from. He ran a corner sweet shop and was a Justice of the Peace and a Magistrate. He also had no arms. He lost both in a tank during the war and used to say he was one of the lucky ones as was still alive. He wore a harness with steel pincers which he learned to use with good effect. His wife had to do everything for him and getting the harness on and off being the biggest chore. Both his wife and himself never heard them moan. He told me about one particular time he was sitting in the local court as the magistrate, and this one yobbo he had in, he fined him a nominal fine, the yobbo shouted he wasn't going to be tried by a robot and wouldn't pay the fine, so he upgraded the fine by 10 pound increases every time the yobbo shouted the same. When he got to about 300 pounds, the yobbo realized he was going to gaol the next time he opened his gob. Its a pity in this day and age we didn't have a few more magistrates like him. It might of even spread to some of the Judges who give out minor punishments for large offences. JS

    Roger Dyer:

Roger, so pleased to see you looking in. Though we only agree with each other fifty% of the time or so. I have missed your bloody good contribution to this site. Never part of the herd, but a thoughtful leader in ideas and personal beliefs, I would welcome your full time return and some articulate reading. If it takes a beg, then I'm begging. I do enjoy an exchange of ideas and philosophies, start posting Townie...Southend Rules!

Following is one of the rules posted on a sister MN site:

"In our guidelines we state the following: We have members from all around the world so please be sensitive to, and respectful of, the opinions, religions, traditions and cultures of others. Avoid racial, religious and political comments. This site is not a corner of a pub with a few mates, you cannot say whatever you want to, it is an international and very public forum."

But it does have a site you join, like we do, where politics etc. can be ranted. Within reason. But you better be sure of your facts, they do not suffer fools gladly.

I've been a member of this site on and off for a number of years. There have been four other "Yanks" that I know of that signed on, plus about five From the Sub-Continent that also served in the British MN. two Dutch and two French, plus one who claimed to be a German. All received a hearty welcome. All pretty soon Abandoned Ship. If this site is not open to seafarers of all nations who served in Brit. or Oz MN don't be two faced in welcoming them. Politely tell them to pish-off and go to the other site.

If they are welcome then treat them accordingly.

One "Yank" gave me a P.M. and told me he wasn't sticking around as he didn't have the power of the pen to argue his case, but he would support me in my efforts. I went walkabout for a year and he tried to answer an attack and got dumped on. Haven't heard from him since, nice guy too.

Oh well! probably pishing in the wind, but I had to say it.

Now entering my brand new bomb and fallout shelter, awaiting in-coming from the usual suspects.

The problem is Rodney I dont think anyone here sees you as a Yank, they see you as a Brit living in the U.S. So you get treated as we all do, with the banter and humor which is par for the course here.

Rodders, all on this site are entitled to their opinion, may not suit all but free speech is a corner stone of our democracy.

We do have the thread for only members, not open to the public and providing we do not insult others in a derogatory manner then we should be able to say what we think.

Yes USA may consider they are the greatest, it is their right to their opinion, something all are entitled to.
But it is just a perception in the end, just as those who thought Blair was the greatest PM ever. But as we now know both of those people were wrong.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Dear Rodney,I sincerely hope, though I feel it may shortly happen, that you don't take sufficient umbrage with we site members, especially the 'usual suspects ' and/or 'cherry pickers',to quote some of your colourful-oops,it's spelt colorful in the States ,isn't it- recent comments in your posts.
As I was saying before I turned this post into one with an awfully long opening sentence- that you don't take sufficient umbrage that makes you take a self-imposed sabbatical from our British MN (Old Friends Plus) Site,as you did last year ,remember? I think that was because you misunderstood the banter and perhaps with hackles raised I feel you thought that we were affording the United States disrespect,I believe today's youngsters use the term 'dissing',which I believe came from the USA,and which I always imagine it to mean in this country going on a good night out in a Norfolk market town (Diss).

Just a minor point to make about about your mention of a 'sister' MN site, abbreviated to SN. Rodney I can't imagine you would think that many of we members here are also not members of SN. We are, because you can't have too much of a good thing can you .
So we do know what debates, comments, arguments ,who has taken umbrage etc ,are currently 'trending' on that site-'trending' ,oh dear another Americanism no doubt. So much ,good and bad, comes from America, doesn't it?

Anyway, don't leave us again, sir,we welcome and value input from all nationalities, pure or hybrid ,straight talking or brainwashed ,Brexit or Remoan,Republican or Democrat.

I for one on this site would not wish to feel anyone on this site feels that they are being disrespected for airing their comments.

    There,I don't think I've said anything you don't want to hear.....have I ?
    Respectfully Yours
    Gulliver
