Re: Rnli
I was told years ago that they survived on charitable donations only. Whether true today or not would be interesting to find out. Maybe someone has noticed and they may get some subsidy from light and harbour dues. The only one who was paid used to be the mechanic. They have done a marvellous job over the years. JWS

Re: Rnli
It was an excellent show, it is on again next Tuesday at 9pm on BBC1.
They do rely on Charity Donations and do a fantastic job. They have Saved THOUSANDS of lives all done by Volunteers.
Cheers
Brian

Re: Rnli
I watched the program last night and it was fasinating to see how these brave men and women go about their work in saving lives of people who do not understand the power of the sea, they even have to rescue themselves sometimes in the hazardous condition even close to shore. The general public I am sure do not know that they volunteer their time and sometimes life for no renumeration at all. Congratulations to the RNLI.

Re: Rnli
I thought the producers spent far too much time of the farm tractor event, and whilst admiring the tenacity of the young farmer, more time should have been allocated to events like the Penlee and other maritime tragedies, very little time was spent on seafarers for which the Lifeboat Service was founded. We have to admire the bravery, the tenacity and the sacrifices these men make, personally I think the programme didn't dwell long enough on that aspect.

Re: Rnli
We did get a brief glimpse of the SAMTAMPA disaster, but no mention of all the British Merchant Seamen who were lost, just the Life Boat Casualties.
A Sailor walked off her on the Tyne before her voyage to Swansea and he was arrested for desertion, and locked up.
He said he was from a Gypsy family and he knew that the ship would sink with all hands, Then it did. 39 Seamen died from the Tyne area, and 8 Lifeboat men of the Mumbles Lifeboat.
Brian
It is possible they may do the Union Star/Penlee Lifeboat disaster another week.

Re: Rnli
I agree Brian, I as most aboard this site did had a donation docked from your pay off that went direct to the RNLI, And only to happy to do so. Give the show a chance i cant see how the producers can run a series on the RNLI Without at some time mentioning the M.N. Terry.

Re: Rnli
a relative of mine captain ronnie vans of south shields collected for the RNLI for years .....he got there gold award for his contribution ......he had no problems collecting in some rough bars round shields for years .......but felt threatened in the later years by the youth of the current times ...who neither seemed to work or want......he did not feel safe .....perhaps that happens to all of us in this generation... but it certainly was not here in the 40s 50 s and 60s......when people were many times less well of than now....cappy

Re: Rnli
I thought it was reasonably good. That was Episode 1,and there are three more to come. It's available to watch on BBC I-Player- entitled Saving Lives at Sea.
The RNLI is just one of the few charities I will always donate to.
