Just for JAE
Well I never!
All this time JAE and I have now only noticed that you are in Powys!
What a lovely place that is,i spent a few Weeks there with a friend quite a few Years back now,and have since lost touch with him, think he moved back to somewhere in London, but not sure!
Gosh I did really enjoy my stay there, and even though it was very cold that time I was there (over Xmas around New Year period) used to get up at sparrow fart to go for my Walks ,on the ice at times, but it was so refreshing! My mate said I was bonkers! LOL
There was a nice track just a minute away from his House that led through a Caravan Park ,and the lovely River Rhiw flowed through !
The Town was so quaint and he took me around, a little village really !
I always said I would love to return there, and hope one day I will be able to when I again go and visit my Daughter in Birmingham!
Cheers

Re: Just for JAE
Thank you for your post Vernon, I live approx 20 miles from Manafon, as you say its a tiny village and very pretty. I have only driven through the village once. I too live in a small village, Penybontfawr pop 434, 1 shop, 1 Pub, 1 Church, 1 Chapel and two Caravan Parks, we have lived here since 2013 having returned from living in Nova Scotia Canada.

Re: Just for JAE
Mind if I chip in. When we lived in Jakarta in the latter half of the 1970s our son boarded at and attended Brookland Hall School at Welshpool, Powys. A beautiful part of the World in the wooded rolling hills of North Wales. We would stay at a fantastic B&B there when visiting and the home cooking was great.

Re: Just for JAE
Richard, before we lived in Penybontfawr we lived for a year in Guildsfield which is right next door to Brooklands, it was then a Golf Academy both Cora and I had a couple of games of golf there. It has recently closed down.I dont know what it is being used for now. We pass it when we go to Welshpool, its in a beautiful location.
It really is a small world isn't it.

Re: Just for JAE
Yes there are some lovely little places around in Wales and as I said the People there I found so friendly, mind you in the Pubs some of them I could hardly understand ,their accents were very strong, but we got by!LOL
Another place I got to go and look at was of course Powys Castle, waht a grand place and after looking around went to the view at the Top,and what a magnificent view it is!
Something I will remember forever!

Re: Just for JAE
It is indeed John. This is the B&B we stayed at but I can't recall the name of the very pleasant lady proprietor. Bed and Breakfast - Tynllwyn Farm, Welshpool, Powys . I don't think Rick played golf there but the proximity must have rubbed off for when we moved up to Singapore in 1979 he came home, became interested and won the Amateur section of the Malaysian Pro Am at Malacca. He's in the US now and golf doesn't get a mention!

Re: Just for JAE
( little bit of Trivia)
John ,note the name of your village ,with interest. My Hometown ,Bridgend. It being the Anglicised version of Penybont ,meaning End or Head ,of the Bridge . Until 1975. Council ,was Penybont Rural Council. Changed in 1975,to Ogwr (Ogmore.)That being, the anglicised version of the river ,running beneath it.) Quoting your
Post. Penybontfawr pop 434, 1 shop, 1 Pub, 1 Church, 1 Chapel . etc. As fawr .means Big. and Bridgend is a large , Town . Makes it a little confusing. As to the origins . Young kids, arguing,in the playground might say,"my town's bigger than yours .so there!" Only joking!
Cheers!

Re: Just for JAE
Richard, Here is a photo of the same B&B as it is today, it shows how times have changed as not only do they have a car park they also have a Helicopter Landing Pad. The reviews are all excellent...B&B.jpg
