Red Meat
I am sure many of you will have seen the recent report from W.H.O. on the risks of cancer from eating too much red and processed meat.
This warning comes after the disclosure of our Prime Ministers fondness for members of the pig family.
He has been advised that if he intends to continue in acts of debauchery he should only do so with a chicken or a haddock.
The Right Honourable David Cameron known to us, his friends as Dave, was unavailable for comment.

Re: Red Meat
I reckon myself and others like me have a good breathing space of 30 years or so. Being brought up in a meat free zone almost, during and after the war, then going to sea in NE coast tramp ships which were never over endowed with a surplus of any food especially meat. We were brought up to be a lean mean working machine. In latter years however came the changes in society, however the over abundance of food made us fat and overfed and always ready for bed. Now retired look back on the skinny years as the time of our lives. Feel sorry for the supermarkets and fully hope they drop their prices on Bacon and steaks and all the things they have been given a bad report on, us old age pensioners will make a scoop if they do. Cheers JS

Re: Red Meat
The fact is that the Body needs Red Meat ,although not in abundance.
I suppose like many others I like my Red Meat, but only eat it in moderation ,like anything else and so far (touch wood) no signs of that Dreaded C
Yes Capt as you know the high protein in that red stuff starts the Gout going, but then there are many other things too like too much Fish,Eggs and a lot of other things too!
I have as said before been free of Gout (thank the Lord) (and Zyloprim) for many Years now,and I eat almost anything these days without the fear of getting that very painful affliction!
But at this stage of life I don't really now care one way or the other,i just eat what I want and enjoy it to the full!
Cheers Be Happy!!

Re: Red Meat
I too eat what I want and when I want it. As Vernon says at this time of life, if you are healthy as can be expected for a person in their 70's or older why worry. I attended a funeral today (another one) where the person that died was only 59 which in todays world is young.

Re: Red Meat
There was a letter to the Editor in todays NZ Herald from a man who said he always had digestive discomfort after a breakfast of eggs and bacon. Several years ago he sought advice and was told to substitute fish for bacon. He has had no further problems and now substitutes fish for any type of red meat !! Regards Peter in NZ.

Re: Red Meat
The Big problem is when the Gall Bladder has been removed is digestion and Acid Reflux. So you then have to be careful with the diet.
Acid reflux can cause a lot of damage to the oesophagus and the Larynx, voice box. and even in extreme cases cancer in those.
The last few months I lost my voice I was speaking like morse code, the sound all broken up, very embarrassing as well. and had an endoscopy and my Larynx was badly damaged by acid reflux. so am now on treatment for it.
So a lot of fried food is now Out.
Cheers

Re: Red Meat
When we were all at sea the thought of diet never occurred to us. A big fried breakfast after coming off the 4-8 or curry and rice for breakfast in Palm Line and E.D.s . The only fat person on a ship was the Chief Steward, also the highest paid with all the fiddles.
Engineers and firemen sweating away down below, deck crowd getting plenty of exercise in the sunshine and fresh air, cooks and stewards always working to a time line. We must have been the fittest of employees until we walked down the gangway and into the nearest bar.
