The Naqib and Canada's general election.
The Canadian general election takes place tomorrow October 19. The candidates are: Mr. Harper, current leader of the Conservative Party and three term prime minister; Mr. Justin Treudeau, Liberal Party leader and son of Pierre Treudeau, one time long serving Canadian P.M., and Mr. Thomas Mulclair "left-leaning" leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP).
An issue of interest to most "Friends" shipmates in Canada has risen in the Canadian elections. Possible it is just a storm-in-a-tea-cup, but Mr. Harper seems to think it could give him the edge he needs to beat current polls leader Justin Treudeau and be P.M. for a fourth term.
In 2011 Canada enacted a rule requiring xxslim women to remove the "niqeb" or veil and reveal their faces during public citizenship ceremonies. Since 2011 there have been 680,000 new Canadians sworn in. Only two have refused to comply with the law.
A lower Canadian court contravenes this law claiming that 'The greatest religious freedom be allowed when administrating the citizenship oath."
The Conservative Mr. Harper objects and states "When you join the Canadian public family citizenship ceremony it essential that that is the time you reveal yourself to Canadians."
What had appear to be a minor issue at the outset has put the two rival parties in an awkward position. While both Messrs. Treudaue and Mulclair both sympathize with the law banning the 'naqib'(veiling that obscures the face excluding the eyes) during citizenship ceremonies, their parties philosophies believe a new ruling infringes on freedom of religion.
It will be interesting to see if this indeed pays a part or not in the U.S.A.'s good neighbors to the North's general election.
Perhaps Canadian shipmates could comment on (a) If I have fairly stated the facts, (b) If this proposed change in law played a part in the outcome.
In any case good luck Canucks and don't forget to vote.

Re: The Naqib and Canada's general election.
Rodney, I think you have covered the subject pretty well. the two contenders are, to my mind, been acting like spoilt kids. blaming the conservatives for everything and stating they and only they can fix the problem. they, both parties started in on the PM for stating he would take Syrian refugees only from the camps, so that they could be properly checked, nothing wrong with that, a sound judgement. The other two, smiling Tom and young (not ready yet) Trudeau, think this is all wrong and we should open the flood gates to all. As far as the niqed is concerned, these two no it all, state this a no brainer, let them wear it where ever they want. They are just going after the so called minority votes with promises that half will not materialize if elected.
The NDP, Mulcair, to my mind will split this country apart. He wants to pull the Canadian troop out of the middle east and not be involved in any conflict, or acting as advisors.
Back in the early nineties, the NDP were voted into Ontario and screwed that up.
The liberals, Trudeau, are banking on the, look what my father did for this country, I bet the americans, the likes of Bush and Obama would love to have him in office, so they can mold him into their way of thinking, ( the shades of Blair and Bush come to mind) Un fortunately I think we are in for a change, So lets sit back and see how they are going to save and build the economy and balance their budgets. I think we are in for a rough ride if a change comes. But I don't think there's going to be a majority.
regards, stan

Re: The Naqib and Canada's general election.
We had something similar here in Oz. Females of a certain religion could request a private meeting the bank so they did not have to remove the veil in public. All went well until a motor bike group complained as they must remove their helmet before entering the bank. That consession has now been withdrawn.

Re: The Naqib and Canada's general election.
When I was in Iran we had to read the Koran, English language version, in there it said " Women must dress modestly"
No mention of Burkhas or niqabs. It is the males who insist women wear it as they do not like other men to look at their wives.
I was in Cairo and talking to an Egyptian lady who was a Professor in the Cairo Museum,
She had long hair and uncovered, just a blouse on, and dressed like a western lady, I asked her about the mode of dress some had to wear. She said it was only a personal choice, it was not compulsory. She did not like to dress like that and was quite happy dressed as a Westerner.

Re: The Naqib and Canada's general election.
There has been much friendship between Prime Ministers Harper and our Abbott who seemed to be on similar wave lengths. Our new prime Minister Turnbull is, in my opinion and in recent polls 68% of those polled what this country sorely needs. Of somewhat gregarious character and sharp as a tack I like to think that our relationship with Canada and a fourth term Harper leadership will be mutually rewarding.

Re: The Naqib and Canada's general election.
I'm sorry, but I find this censorship of the word ****** annoying and childish. To write an article using or receiving ****** censorship detracts from any point one is making, or news one is quoting.
I defy anyone to find a denigrating name calling of an individual's religion or lack of one, or insult any race as a whole in any of my posts. If I am making a personal comment about a certain individual, and wish to draw attention to a particular act this individual is doing, and the individual or group are doing it in the name of their religion, then I would address him/he/them as *******(using the spelt out form). If their religion pays no part in the story then I would use the nationality i.e Arab, Iranian, Tunisian, or Timbuctooian or whatever.
If I was so low or crass to insult a peoples religion or place of birth remove the entire post or thread. Do that form of censorship enough times and I as an adult would get the message very fast. As it is I can get around it by using **slims...slims...mozzies..etc.. To me this is not mature. I am forced to add a bad joke to what is perceived as an insult to a religion.
Rant over.

Re: The Naqib and Canada's general election.
#1 & 2Thank you. Both excellent posts.
I believe we will see Harper returned with a minority.
Wasn't too keen on him choosing the Ford brothers for bed mates.[ ex controversial mayor of Toronto]
Both Liberals and NDP are in favor of bringing in more -forbidden word- into Canada.
Trudeau is all for taxing the wealthy, to give more to the middle class.
Regular Robin Hood.
Meanwhile he lives in a mansion and drives a high end auto.
Wonder how much of his own money we will see if he was to get in.
Have cast my vote, so we will see.
PS was following a septic pump truck this morning, on my way to vote.
Sign on the back said. This truck is full of political promises.
That about covers it!!
