GerRe #78.
Brian, remember the British Parliament trusted the German protestant House of Hanover to be monarchs of Britain in preference to the catholic King James II of the House of Stuart. One could say that this was the start of Sectarianism in this country which unfortunately exists to this day and is nothing to be proud about.
English and Proud of what?, to serve under a German monarch, "surely not".

'English and Proud' proud of what we achieved in the past, in our explorers, our inventors, our fortitude, our language etc etc etc regardless who was at, or is at the helm, regardless of their forbears, proud to be part of four nations who gave so much to the world as Great Britain/United Kingdom. Proud of our country which so many knock, they should try living in countries that offer so much less, including freedom of speech

Re: English and Proud.
Hi Fouro,
I really thought the Queen was British, Never knew that she was a German,
.
Her Mother was born in Scotland Her dad was born in England, she was born in England, her granddad was born in England and so was her great Granddad, ad fin. so I really thought she was British, I bet her passport says she was British.
Didn't Henry V111 Throw out Catholicism?? wasn't it he who banned Catholics from being a Prime Minister.? He did not want to be ruled by Rome.
That is why tony Bliar who was a closet Catholic, married to a Catholic wife with Catholic children, , was a Protestant during his time as Prime Minister and as soon as he gave that job up he then converted to Catholicism.
another double standard by Bliar.
Why do you think all the immigrants want to come to UK ? because it is the Best there is.
Cheers
Brian.

Re: English and Proud.
Brian you most probably already know this, the Royal Family were German Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and changed their name to Windsor in 1917 due to the anti German sentiment in the British Empire during WW1.

Re: English and Proud.
Yes but The Queen was born in Britain of British Parents, so she is British, what happened in history is irreverent.
My ancestry goes back to the Viking days but that does not make me a Norwegian.
as Fouro said we had a German Monarch.
I have a friend who was born in a Japanese Prison Camp in Shanghai China, her parents were English and were engineers working in China when the war started and she was pregnant. Now that does not make my friend a Chinese, or Japanese.
So the Queen must be British.
Cheers
Brian

"It sickens me when the media calls your Jihadi Johns and their ilk Brits", in my mind they are not British and never will be. A lot of
people queue up to find
find fault in us, but are very happy to live among us. Our Queen is British through and through, and has OUR country in her heart "ALWAYS", she has dedicated her life to do her job the best she can, sadly I can't say the same for some of her extended family
who have let her down badly "Thats my take on it", I agree 100% with all you say there Brian. Cheers, John F.

Re: English and Proud.
William the conquerer was from France but that does not make the English French, thank the lord. If all countries were to investigate their heritage they would find all manner of oddities regarding those who ruled. Australia was first colonized by British, Irish and a few Scots, but they are now Australians.
But England/UK/GB has at one time held the largest empire of any nation, done more for the world than most others and even though I a now an ex pat, no that does not mean ex Irish, I still hold her dear to my heart.

Re: English and Proud.
[QUOTE=happy daze john in oz;213898]William the conquerer was from France QUOTE]
He was of Viking extraction.
Though he spoke a dialect of French and grew up in Normandy, a fiefdom loyal to the French kingdom, William and other Normans descended from Scandinavian invaders. William’s great-great-great-grandfather, Rollo, pillaged northern France with fellow Viking raiders in the late ninth and early 10th centuries, eventually accepting his own territory (Normandy, named for the Norsemen who controlled it) in exchange for peace.
Every English monarch who followed William, including Queen Elizabeth II, is considered a descendant of the Norman-born king. According to some genealogists, more than 25 percent of the English population is also distantly related to him, as are countless Americans with British ancestry.
William, an Old French name composed of Germanic elements (“wil,” meaning desire, and “helm,” meaning protection), was introduced to England by William the Conqueror and quickly became widespread. By the 13th century, it was the most common given name among English men. Today it still ranks in the top 10, and some have predicted that the future crowning of another King William will propel the name even higher.
