Winston Churchill
In the words of the great man himself, Who would turn in his grave if he was to witness the state of affairs these proud islands has got themselves into after the sweat and tears endured by the whole nation, And he new a thing or two about evacuating children from the main targets of war. The Evacuated Children Of The Second World War | Imperial War Museums
Winston Churchill said on 27 January 1942
'But for the Merchant Navy who bring us the food and munitions of war, Britain would be in a perilous state and indeed, without them, the Army, Navy and Air Force could not operate'

Re: Winston Churchill
Totally agree Terry - a great statesman and Prime Minister. The state funeral that was awarded to him reflects the mood of the nation in the mid 1960's. How I wish there was another Churchill running the country right now. I think Cameron is doing the best he can but with the Labour Party and the SNP joining together it must be pretty hard going. I personally have a great respect for David Cameron - the big danger comes from Alex Salmond and the SNP. Make no mistake their intention is to change the UK forever. Probably some of the Yes voters in the referendum for independence held in Scotland just on 12 months ago would disagree, but that is their prerogative. And just in case somebody wants to jump on the bandwagon and hold lengthy discussions on the pros and cons of the SNP - forget it! I have a lot more important things to do with my time, like cutting a 75 foot hedge on the front of my house in the morning and then spending a couple of hours in the pub and having a few pints.
Regards
John C.

Re: Winston Churchill
If the UK ever finds itself in any kind of conventional war whether it be world wide or just territorial, it will find it is even worse prepared than it was for the last one. The armed forces are down to the lowest I believe they have ever been, their shipping is next to non existent both naval and merchant. The world since the last world war seems to have been determined by certain powers to rattle the sabres between different political extremes, capitalism and communism, with a few rogue nations to add to the smouldering pot with their differing views to both, relying on religious beliefs. There was absolutely no reason why the world should have been turned in the direction it was so soon after the last big conflict. There was nothing to prove apart from certain individuals egocentric wants of personal renown and fame. They were the ill fortune the world got stuck with. There was faults on both sides and for a short time people thought the days of wars were over. How wrong can they of been. All wars to me are caused by political movers and shakers for different reasons which are usually personal and bear no relevance to their populations. As has been said over and over again any change of governance by a foreign nation on another is unacceptable and is a lot of the causes of the present conflicts. The nations of the world should be left to their own devices to make their own destiny, as long as it is not a threat to anyone else. JS

Re: Winston Churchill
A Letter in this weeks International Express shows there are other people with similar views as those expressed elsewhere..Titled Ted Heath. Some exerts from same," so now the man who deceived us all into joining the EEC in the 1970"s is a suspected child molester as well". " Let us not confuse the good name of Ted Heath the trombonist with the shame of the politician who dragged Britain into its many problems caused by membership of the E.U." There are other letters similar and I really wonder how many letters of discontent they really do get. The country is certainly divided on the issue and as always I wonder on his real intentions on delaying the referendum which is one of the reasons many elected the present government. JS

Re: Winston Churchill
#5... He should of got a mention in a previous post as well as the one he supposedly got in despatches as a captain of ack ack believe he was stationed in the UK during war years. However apparently was a good fiddler, and conducted the London Philamonic orchestra for a session at one time as remember seeing on a news reel. Also having Morning Cloud his own yacht was probably convenient for him shooting across to the South of France and no immigration difficulties, so had his own important reasons for going into Europe. Cheers JS

Re: Winston Churchill
I have Winston Churchill's book, `The Malakand Massacre,`
about the time he served on the North West Frontier in Afghanistan,
Reading it was almost identical to reading todays Newspaper when our Troops were in Afghanistan
Nothing had changed, they were still getting ambushed and killed by the Afghans.
Our Politicians today Do Not Read History. There is a lot to learn from History, it has a habit of repeating itself.

Agree entirely Brian, These public schoolboy twits running this country of ours should look over there shoulder now and again and learn what life is really like for some people before they legislate some idiotic reforms across the board, And that goes for all parties whatever side of the fence there on. Me and J Pruden where having a chat in the grove the other afternoon we where approached by two Community police officers the know police keeping force for the county, One a young girl aged know more than 18 must have weighed in at least 18 stone, The other a young lad about the same age, Wasn't as street wise as any of us as young deck or galley boys heaven help us Terry.
