looking for info on the ship sarawak
Hi
Can any one tell me anything about a sailing ship the SARAWAK around 1860/75 please, she sailed between Liverpool and Canada around that time,
the information is for a very distant cousin of mine, she said that her great great grandfather Hugh Jeffreys(could be Jeffries?) sailed on on this ship, and he and eight other seamen drowned from this ship. Hugh was born in 1833 in Antrim Ireland but lived in Liverpool England, the date of his death that my cousin found was 13 December 1872, she could not find out anything else like, did the whole ship go down? and if so where? I know this is a bit sketchy, but this info I am getting is coming from via USA to Wales (snail mail) then to me, I assume the cousin in the USA is very old and does not have a PC
Any help would be greatly appreciated by my cousin, thanks

Re: looking for info on the ship sarawak
Hi Albert, this may be of interest all I have found so far:
Hugh Jeffreys born Belfast aged 36 on the Ionia [ Reg in Glasgow] Liverpool 16/2/1870 AB.
Wages £3.00 per month, £1.00 advance, no Allotment. Balance of payment on discharge in
Liverpool 17/4/1870 £3.15s. Official Number:17496 Reference Number:387CRE/440
Name: Hugh Jeffrys
Age: 30
Birth Year: abt 1838
Birth Place: Belfast
Event Date: 11 Jul 1868
Port of Registry: Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Ship Name: Virginia
Official Number: 45170
Reference Number: 387CRE/837
Was he married? Marriage cert showing but surname is Jeffry & Jeffrey and four in Scotland. Don't be concerned abt birth year, Ancestry is usually askew a few years either way
Sorry Albert above is all I could locate.
There is "The Sarawak Steamship Company" but that was formed in 1875. Hopefully some of the chaps will be successful on the ship front

Re: looking for info on the ship sarawak
Hello Al,
You are right there is not much out there on this ship. Hugh Jeffreys aged 39, date of death 13.12.1872 - drowned. The ship was SARAWAK official number 35200 and the captain was William Leask - the voyage was to N America and the ship was lost. As there is not much out there about the ship I cannot see any detail of survivors.
Regards
Hugh

Have sent an email requesting any info on the Captain [which Hugh provided
] and how they came by it. Might lead to something. Fingers crossed
