Randomly threw myself into the world of politics and marketing
Heys,
A local Councillor (who I support) put on Facebook if anybody was able to do some marketing design for him on social and physical media (facebook and on paper). I just said I could and he gave me back what he wanted me to say but left the creative side up to me. As you know I'm now unemployed and have a lot of free time to kill anyway, so I gave it a go.
Here's one I came up with (anonymised for obvious reasons)

I made more, but this is my favorite.
I was given no resources, the only images I had to work with was those on General Public Licence over the internet (But the images used are all of local facilities). My only disappointment is the central image, its a bit pixelated but that's all I had to work with. I have no background or long standing interest in graphic design or marketing.
Do you think I have a knack for this? I'm entirely self taught, and if theres anything I need to do that I don't know how to I just check the internet. But I was quite pleased with myself and the fact that these are already published pieces in a local election campaign.
Nothing that helps me get to sea though

Hi shipmates, Hi stephen. You have talent. Many unemployed people help out in loads of areas for no pay? A friend who had a bad breakdown help out a charity, with the forms and meetings to apply for a grant, for a large amount of money, it took him allmost 3 years, he worked over 16 hours a week on this ,the result the Charity was rewarded with the grant? he was not payed a penny... There is more to say but as I dont want trouble...

Re: Randomly threw myself into the world of politics and marketing
Louis... Re volunteer work.. My wife works one day a week in the Senior Cits centre sitting behind a desk and taking in the money for the subsidised meals etc. Is a vey modern centre, Restraunt, Computer Room, Hairdressers, Library, Theatre room, Billiard Room, Bar which they open on special occassions. She has made me join as well as herself, however I refuse to volunteer for anything, they have their own bus and are often looking for drivers. I felt I didnt belong as they were mostly old people there, and funnily up until lately didnt think of myself as old. However I have just noticed that one of the conditions of becoming a member is you have to be 50 or over. If they now consider that as old and the government are pushing for a retiring age of 70, who is one to beleive. However I still refuse to volunteer for anything. Cheers John S

Volunteer work on your C.V. is an excellent way to show your work ethic to future employers.
As has been asked before have you investigated Fleetwood college? Did you attend the recent open day in Liverpool for persons wishing to take up a career at sea and finally have you investigated the super yacht side of the business via Southampton Warsah Nautical College. I know also there are a number of specialist crewing agencies for the yacht industry that take on un trained personnel.

Re: Randomly threw myself into the world of politics and marketing
I am currently in my tenth year as a volunteer with the local community health centre. Her indoors does a bit as well. I find it rewarding and encouraging, it keeps the mind going as well as the body and it gives assistance to those who are far worse off than I.

Happy daze John in Oz.

I'm sorry but you are very wrong about volunteer work.
For one example: The Scout Association is very important to me, I have been a member since age 10 and have since risen to manage a cub pack of 25 cubs on a weekly basis as the Head cub scout leader. I don't get paid, and I'm certainly out of pocket for my participation in scouting. But It wouldn't exist without the countless volunteers like me, giving kids experiences they would never have the opportunity to experience or the confidence that brings. Your cynicism can be calmed by the fact that I actually get a lot of reward from it, just immaterial.
It's not about "being a mug working for nothing" - It's about having belief in the intrinsic value of the work you do that no capitalist/bottom line society would pay for.

Re: Randomly threw myself into the world of politics and marketing
A young relative, age 12, Anne`s grandson, does graphic design on his computer, he does computer games and he puts them on Youtube.
They pay £1 for every 1000 hits. this is world wide, So this young 12 year old school boy is making a lot of money. one guy he knows can make up to £2,ooo,ooo a month so he tells me.
His father employs a graphic designer for his company`s advertising and pays him £500,000 a year part time.
So get away from your Political Party and do your own, they pay nowt and there is BIG money in that game.
Cheers
Brian.
