The problems with livestock farmers as opposed to arable farmers , they are asset rich and cash flow poor . after a quarter of a century in the Dairy Industry , I saw a lot of farming trials and tribulations . One of the problems with Kosher , is under Kosher regs the rear two quarters are unclean and worth around £1000 , does the slaughterman pay to dump them or put them in the food chain . Would the Kosher consumer pay three times the price for his forequarters from a British slaughterhouse . But I agree with the sentiments expressed here already , I don't mind eating it , but would like to know .I believe done correctly the animal's pain is minimised . I also hunt , and most birds are dead before they hit the ground , those not are despatched quickly . My understanding is that in all cases a stun gun with a captive mushroom headed bolt can be used , this does not penetrate the scull .

Not really Louis, much is just talk. A pretty much local Jewish college has the Rabbi light the pastry oven in the mornings, that is the only part he plays in the whole process of the food chain. He has to be seen to be somehow involved and that is his part.

I agree with Rob, I could choose to eat allsorts, but would like to decide for myself.

Oz exports a large amount of live cattle and sheep to many countries. There have been a number of incidents where the aimals have been treated very cruely. The oz gov has now put a ban on nay country that does not complay with humane killing.

In lots of cases in the world, i could happily do the job of a hangman, but no way could i become a slaughterman. I know someone has to do it, thank god its not me. KT

Very true John, but there has been some graphic footage shown here on TV of cruelty in slaughter yards in Indonesia, Pakistan and Iraq.

The UK / EU rules even for ritual slaughter are quite strict , as is that of the transport of live animals .There is a practical reason as well as a humanitarian one , scared cattle . sheep / pigs and such like pump adrenalin into the meat , and that toughen sit up , so the easy teh slaughter the better the meat . In trying to get to the bottom of this there is some horrific footage . As far as I can determine Denmark is the only country to ban ritual slaughter , and I never regarded them as a humane country , the conditions they keep farrowing sows under is barbaric , especially in comparison to the UK . The minute they banned it they were hit with cries of anti semitic , and look what happened to the Jews in World War II . Done properly , and I emphasise that , I have seen that method of despatching a goat and sheep , it is quick and the animal in its last seconds is not to distressed . My dichotomy is do we do it and do it well , or do we import it from somewhere where the rules are less caring . On balance i think we should keep ritual slaughter in the UK , dispose of the hind quarters on the general market , but mark the kill method with a brand stamp . UK sourced lamb supplied to Clan Line ships was branded " MK " for ****** killed . As the Health , dates and slaughterers details re branded on anyway , how hard is it to brand MK , or JK into the skin . Gives us the choice at the butchers shop , if not at the caterers .
