You were educated?

I would hazard a guess that the majority of us here were educated by teachers who had suffered through at least one world war and whom had been brought up in the era where the three R's were the basic building blocks of an education system that had stood the test of time and did not suffer from meddling by various government's. I believe the down turn in education started in the early 70's when entry standards for teaching were lowered.
At the time I was going out with a teacher who taught at a large comprehensive in the North East and she worked tremendously hard at delivering her subjects but was basically learning the subject herself the night before she was teaching it. She had done her training at a well known teacher training college in St. Albans and during one school break I drove her down there in order for her to meet up with some of her ex. college friends.
Imagine my horror when I found that,
Her so called best friend and cleverest college mate was now assistant headmaster, living in a state of perpetual war with his wife in a house that if a Port Health Inspector had visited he would have immediately slapped a detention notice on it such was the filthy conditions they were living in.
Another of her friends, female teaching infants, we went to visit, at her house the door was opened by a hells angel, filthy with oil and tattoo's . This girl lived with a bunch of them and openly admitted that she drank every night, was their sex toy nightly and invariably only got out of bed each day in just enough time to splash water on her face, dress in the first thing that came to hand before dashing off to the school where she worked, sometimes arriving on the back of a hells angels bike.
We spent 5 days there and I could not get away quick enough. On the drive back North I made the comment that neither of her friends were setting much an example to their pupils with there obviously chaotic life style. This led to some rather heated arguments doing 70 up the A1 in my little Alfa, the gist of it being that to her, was that a teachers private life was solely theirs alone and it was what they delivered in school was more important than setting a lifestyle setting.
I leave you all to ruminate and comment but my thoughts are that how you conduct your private life has a direct bearing upon how you deliver your work in the workplace.

john funny thing I never liked working in a teacher police woman or nurses houses always the most untidy no wonder infections are going around in hospitals nurses go to work in uniforms put on in some midden of a house?

Regarding nurses uniforms, you are right. In the U.K. in most hospitals they travel to work in their uniforms which to me means that they could be bringing all sorts of infections into the hospital.
After I suffered a stroke in 08 I was in a Belgium hospital for a week and the difference between that and a U.K. hospital was remarkable.
You never sam any of the non medical administrative staff. They had their own wing with a separate entrance and were never seen on the wards or treatment areas.
All medical staff and even the volunteers bringing the books and magazines round wore medical scrubs (even the consultants) that they put on in there changing room before going on shift and entering the medical areas. These scrubs were discarded at the end of the shift and cleaned by the hospital.
When it came time for my discharge it took around 15 minutes to have all my medical records and scans burnt onto a CD that I carried home with me for passing onto my GP. The records, notes etc. were all in English.
Brilliant hospital that was spotless and had no MSRA etc.

#43... John I am a strong believer that a teacher should be a role model to their students. Anyone in charge of children should lead by example. This applies not only to teachers but to us all. Especially those who have a large image be it sports players, movie stars, the Royal Family, somewhere in there is also the politicians, and last but not least the parents. I would no sooner give a young person bad advice if I could help it, than fly to the moon. Cheers John Sabourn.

Re #45 here in Oz the law says it is illegal to travel to work in your uniform if you are employed in the food isdustry or hospitals. I have sent staff home who breached this regulation. But as with all lwas it is only as good as the plolicing of it.

Having spent 14 years in the university system and having seen the quality of students who went into teacher education courses I am not surprized at the low level of education we now have here in Oz.

In my primary school days we had for a number of yeras as our class teacher a Ms Buchanan from Queensland and no harder woman have I ever met. But all he students did well, all passed the 11 plus exams and I know all were more than capable of understanding the English language, spelling, punctuation etc. She would hold spelling Bees, and if we had not got it right by the time the bell went for recess, too bad you stayed until you got it right. One day we totaly missed the lunch hour because of this. Can you imagine that today??

See Gay Marriage just on news has not been accepted in Canberra as all believed it would. This idea that they would get what they want is persistant with the generations after most of us. The attitude that I want gets, used to be with us I want doesnt get. There will now be a big Hoo Hah about peoples rights and all the rest of it. Tell me John what has happened in Oz to the Queens English that is spoken by the young? It appears to be the girls-ladies in the main? I notice it most especially with reporters. It seems that they end their words like this, goING or hAS along with Melissa X rePORTING. Weird, irritating & just plane awful on the ear.

Richard, I think kids today will grow up unable to hold a conversation. This applies to my own Grandkids living in UK. They can all be sitting together on the settee and don't talk to each other, would rather text or whatever you call it. I don't even carry a mobile phone, but do keep one in the car in case break down. I can see it is useful for business, but fail to see why a housewife doing her shopping has to have one glued to her ear all the time. To me just bad manners and breeding. Cheers John Sabourn
