The Pig was great on most of the Liners I was on, There were always fellows who were good singers and guitar players
We had Joe Finnegan and Tommy Lawless who always put on a great show, Joe and Tommy won the Carol Levis show on TV and turned down a recording contract as they preferred to go to sea. They always won the Bulova Gold Watch Radio Show in Montreal. Joe has about 20 gold watches, I got nothing as I sang like a tortured turkey, Good fun
then there were the tables, Cock and hen boards, Crown and anchor boards Roulette, Poker schools , Crappy Dice. etc. always good entertainment at night. The Gambling was prohibited in those days on ships that went to US, so the passengers used to come down to the Pig and gamble there. Bob Hope and Burt Lancaster were regulars in the Pig when they were travelling with us. and always bought all hands a beer.
So it was a little more entertaining than just sat on the ar5e end with a can. Most cargo ships you were rationed to a couple of cans a day if lucky, In the Pig sup as many pints of Wrexham Lager as you can, an old 8 pennys a pint.

a cook just married wanted to skin out before we left the uk to go tramping we had gone from the tyne to London......to pick up jags for the states .....he had a yankee gold bulova and offered it for the best price ,,,I had 30 bob and he sold it to me it was a fine looking watch .....never had any idea of its worth......but sold it in a honky inbrazil years later cant remember what for any body know the value in 57...cappy
