My maxim for life (you can substitute "captain" for any rank/person)
A Captain is a man /women who starts of life knowing absolutely nothing about everything and goes through life learning more and more until he ends up knowing everything about nothing.

John #13, I suspect a personal aspect to your remarks, all I would say is that prior Google 'The Captain' was expected to be a font of all knowledge because of his 'position', he would be asked impossible questions from crew members seeking solace or advice on subjects on which the master had no personal knowledge what-so-ever, but he felt duty bound to try and help in the best way he could, and the best way wasn't 'Sorry mate can't help you on that one!', to a man in trouble whether mental, anquish, dilemna or other an answer is solace, and eases the mind. I know as a young Supt, I was asked for advice on many subjects none marine related because of my 'position' and not my life experiences, I was even asked advice on marriage from quite a few, even though I was single and advised them so, but their reply was 'but you must know, your the super', luckily I could only base my answers on those questions on my parents happy marriage, and as Dad was at sea it seemed to help. Men in doubt about something, sometimes cannot see the wood for the trees, but hopefully an 'outside the box' ( a modern term I hate) common sense answer helps those in their time of need, other questions I have also replied, I don't know, but I will find out and always have to the best of my ability and sources available at that time, even writing letters if the ship sailed before I got the answer. I had that attitude to help because when at sea as a young man, when I saw a job could be done an easier way, I always asked why did we do it the way we were doing it and was told 'its always been done that way, get on with it'. I also resolved that if I ever got to their exalted position I would always listen to a young fresh mind which hadn't been corrupted by 'its always been done that way' the old can learn from the young as well as vice versa, how many of us have given the video controls to our kids or grandkids to sort out the 'bluddy things gone wrong again'

Mind you I do know where you are coming from because we have all sailed with those who are an authority on everything under the sun because of their position at sea.

Hi Jim, I have not been back to Liverpool for about thirty years ( no family or relatives left there ).
Where is that pub? While on the subject could you tell me if the Queens next to the mission is still there, we used to meet up there after the Pool. Other watering holes the Slaughterhouse, many happy afternoons spent in the downstairs bar. The Yankee bar and wine lodge next door in Lime Street. The Temple in Dale Street. The wine lodge in Charlotte Street, large Ausie whites all round, also what became of the Pool, was it demolished or used for another purpose?

    Cheers Lou

The pub was called Kirklands but i dont know how long that was for. It's as you go around the corner top of Renshaw St.into Hardman St.opposite the bombed out church. The pool and the mission are well gone the Queens is still there.Liverpool is a far different place now than when you were here and in fact it changes on a daily basis, for the better i might add.If you have'nt been here for 30 years it is well worth a trip, hotels are cheap enough maybe the next meet up you will make the effort and i know if you do you will certainly come back again even if it's for the cheap ale.

regarding the "its always done that way". I have always said if you want to find the easiest way to do a job you give it to the laziest man

Not always true Alf, I saw a lot of easier ways to do things (afloat and ashore), but lazy I have never been, as anyone who knows me and also worked with me will testify, even if they hate my guts. But there were so many people steeped in the 'its always been done like that' it stifled free thought and innovation. Luckily I also sailed with those open to fresh pair of eyes, as was I, somebody has to think of a better way to do something, otherwise we would never have evolved, the lazy ones were always sorted out in the end.
