Attention
Speaking with my nephew tonight he told me a story about his father.
My brother in law was born in Tipperary Irish Republic, and at the age of 18 went to live and work in Birkenhead where he met his future wife. They later emigrated to Australia.
But before that in about 1956 he returned to Ireland for some six months as he had been told by a mate that if he did not he would be called up under the conscription rules.
Maybe some of you would know the correct answer, but I was under the opinion that only British Citizens, holders of British passports or British nationality could be conscripted into the British Army.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Attention
Hello John
I think it would depend on when he was born. The Irish Free State came into being in 1922 as a Dominion of the British Empire. - N. Ireland opted out. It came to an end in 1937 when the citizens voted to replace the 1922 Constitution and Southern Ireland became Eire.
My father ( Capt. W.J Hartley D.S.C.) was born in 1905 in Waterford, Ireland, so he was a British citizen . However, I have just found a document form the Home Office ( Oct 1964) "Noting your claim to remain a British subject under Section 2 of the British Nationality Act, 1948......The effect of the step which you have taken is therefore that you remain a British subject, provided that you were a British subject and a citizen of Eire on 31st December 1948 "
Well, that sounds perfectly clear, doesn't it ? NOT !
Bit of a cheek when he had spent the entire War risking his life in the Arctic and Atlantic Convoys for the British War effort.
regards
Brenda
ps I remember him telling us that during the War some Home Office officials came on board, " Looking for aliens" When Dad asked who they meant they said, "Foreigners and Irish" . His reply consisted of telling them that the water in the dock was very cold and it would be a good idea if they left before finding out exactly what the temperature was....

Re: Attention
Spike Milligan was born in India, His father was serving there in the British Army.
In WW2 Spike was in the British Army and fought in North African and italian Campaigns, also badly wounded.
He returned to Britain and London where he was brought up, and started the Goon Show. He was repeatedly turned down for British Nationality by the British Government and No British Passport, In the end he applied for and got an Irish Passport.
If he was a member of a Terrorist Organisation from the Mid East who arrived here asking for asylum he would have got a British Passport.

Re: Attention
A bit off thread but similar to what Brian is saying.Deport Row Paedo Wins Damages Bid.You just could'nt make it up .A Sudanese guy Jumar Kater Saleh 25 was locked up in 2008 after being convicted of two offences of sexual activity with a 13 year old girl. After he had served his time for the offences he spent a further 2 years in gaol whilst the government tried to deport him.He won his right to stay on human rights grounds.Appeal judges ruled that 8 months of his time in gaol was unlawful and gave Saleh the right to damages. The Home Ofiice and his lawyers will now thrash out a damages figure. Can you imagine him pulling this off in France.
Regards.

Re: Attention
Hi John, I have a mate that was born and bred in Guernsey. He and his mother were evacuated to the mainland just before the Germans arrived. After the War he stayed in UK. When his National Service papers arrived he was asked if he was going to do his time. If he chose not to do National Service, he was told polity, that he could bugger off back to Guernsey, ( he did his time) I don't know but I would have thought that your brother in law would have been given the same option.

Re: Attention
Disgraceful.
There should be No human Rights laws here, we never had them for a thousand years or more, the Berstereds use it to their own advantage. We need a Government with GUTS,
Drag him out of gaol on a plane same day and out of here.
If they dont like it shoot them, they will soon get on a plane then..

Re: Attention
Well Brian, your mate next door may will soon be gainfully employed if this spreads, in Sheffield the Pakistani community have formed night patrols to advise (and enforce) Roma's that they should not be gathering in groups at night and that they should old their meetings inside and keep the streets clear of themselves and their rubbish, they are also advising these immigrants that they should integrate into the British way of life, it makes you wonder what is now the British way of life. These patrols apparently have the blessing of the local police and council. I am trying to imagine the furore and arrests for racilism if a white community anywhere had instigated such patrols against any other community, of any ethnicity, creed or colour.
Now the question is, do I sign off with, God Save the Queen, or Allah Akhtbar, answers on a postcard please

Re: Attention
Former Home Secretary Jack Straw says allowing working rights to Poles and other EU migrants was a "Well intentional policy we messed up."He admitted Labour failed to anticipate the scale of migration when 8 former Soviet bloc nations joined the EU.His remarks came on the day MP David Blunkett, his predecessor as Home Secretary warned constituents in Sheffield there was a growing danger of riots unless Roma migrants were prepared to make more of an effort to fit in.I watched the show on channel 4 the Roma are all young men in boys hanging around the streets in gangs in Sheffield. They say there are 200.000 Roma here at the moment with lots more to come.
