New London Container Port
I see on the News to-day that London has now opened a new deep water Container Port on the Thames. The UK's second largest. What chance has Liverpool and Southampton got for the future. Looking at the pictures there appear to be a fair amount of room for expansion.

Re: New London Container Port
hi George. I missed the news. where is this container port?. there is a very large one at blackwall, Victoria deep water terminal, which is right by the southern entrance to the blackwall tunnel, and that is very big with lots more room when needed.

Re: New London Container Port
I can't remember the full story it is somewhere on here,I'm not sure if it was Louis the Amigo who first posted it and it was said so many thousand Chinese were going to live on a new estate there.Does anyone remember this story.George i don't think it will bother Liverpool work has started on the new dock here at Seaforth to take the new breed of ship.Ships coming across the Western Ocean are not going to travel all that way to London when they are right on Liverpool, plus we are central for distribution.

Re: New London Container Port
Hi Fellas
Do a Google Search for London Gateway(the name of the development) and you can read all about the new port.

Re: New London Container Port
Isn't this new container port built on the Isle of Grain.?
There was talk of them turning Shellhaven into a container port.
Haven't been up the Thames for a number of years, so not sure of the location and google earth does not want to work on my computer

Hi Alf, if you do a Google as John Callon said in his post there are several different articles about the Port seems its on the north side of the Thames in the Thurrock area.

Re: New London Container Port
Just done a quick search and the new London Gateway container port is built on the site of the old SHELLHAVEN refinery at Stanford le Hope. Deep water channel already existed up to and beyond this point plus decent sized turning area off the berths and many of the jetties were already their. The oil gear was taken off years ago leaving the big concrete jetties remaining. All that was needed was to link them all together, infill between the jetty and shore and lay anew surface over the area.

Re: New London Container Port
All the new Container cranes are coming in , built in China and on Chinese ships, built in China. Shown on TV news,
We dont seem to be able to build any of them now.
I did here that the Isle of Grain , ex refinery, was also going to be rebuilt as a big container port.
Cheers
Brian.

The cranes for the Southampton Container Port are not built in China. They are bult by a Swiss company who also own Southampton Football Club.
