House Insurance.
Talk about Rip Off Britain!!!.It is always worth challenging your house insurance (or any insurance if it comes to that).I got my renewal premium through they wanted £204 building only.I went on compare the market entered my details and was given quotes from all the different companies. My insurance company Santander was on there quoting £60 less than what they had sent me in the post.I phoned them and good enough they have knocked it down by £60,how can they do that???.It just shows you if you just accept it,it costs you money, and believe it or not I could've got it far cheaper if I would've changed company's.
Regards.

When I insured my house last August, They said , "Do you live within 400 metres from Water." I said `No`, They said `Wrong` there is a lake by your house. We have your house on Google Maps.`
I said it is a Duck pond and it is down a steep hill and 50 feet below the level of the properties, `
Them `Makes no difference your house is near water so your Insurance has gone up £100.`
I tried several Insurance companies and all said the same, "We have your house on google maps. so you have a chance of flooding. "
That is a big flood when a duck pond can rise more than 50 feet to flood my house. I have lived here for 50 years since 1963, the surface has never risen one inch as it overflows down a waterfall another two hundred feet to a lake half a mile away that overflows into the River Croal, that flows into the River Irwell, That flows into the River Mersey and that flows into the sea at a height of 500 feet below where I live.
I need a Tsunami of over 500 feet in height to flood my house.
They said it is a possibility with water. So £100 extra Insurance.
They have you by the Goolies and by Google Satelite.

There are some flood risk areas Green , not red , so low risk at Gilnow , I have listed the Environment Agency interactive map for the locality , if you are in the Green zone tough , if not you have a good argument to base your defence of the £100 on
Environment Agency - What's in your backyard?
You will have to input your postcode in the top left box

more crooks ripping us off
Hi shipmates, Hi Jim Brady , All insurance is a mine-field car, home, life ,and any other they can sell you. The purpose is to take your money, with the least amount of payout if any? When someone rips/ them off now very rare indeed , they put up the cost to all they other customers The law is on there side? we cant pay you out because see small print on page 43. or They did not pay because you did not tell them something? or the moon was not in the right part of the sky they are crooks

I'm not sure what the insurance market is in the UK but it is like most 'services', competition is the name of the game. Spend some time getting quotes from every source including reputable (if any!) intermediaries. Use whatever influence you can muster - as this thread is doing - to expose arrogant gouging and misinformation such as false risk exposure charts used as a tool to gouge. Name and shame - within the law of course.
There are decent operators out there somewhere; use them or shame them into a need for decency.
And - be sure that you take care in providing information about the risk you want to sell that it is correct from your side to avoid difficulty in settling any claim - IT IS A CONTRACT. Also, if a substantial loss has occurred and you are unhappy with the treatment being dished out, look at the option of using a public loss assessor (who acts as your assessor) and may get paid to some extent by the insurer.

New for old:
Many now will not give you the cash for much, instead offer new for old. Say it is your washing machine, they look at deals themselves and replace. They buy at cost and save a fortune. Also, stops people taking the full money and buying something else.

That is the norm now, Keith and is a disincentive for a trend when new for old was brought in. At least having a new replacement is better than getting some cash relative to the second hand value of the claimed for items. Often it is the loudest squeek that get the most grease and any canny buyer will go for the best deals. So, on the receiving end what you want is the best result and it shouldn't really matter if the buyer is able to do so because of volume or clout in the process.

Yes theseinsurance companys sure try to rip you off it pays to shop around i did a few years ago and i got a very good deal for the house ,contents and car and i think i have save a bit of money ovr the years .I think they have some incompetent people in some of these jobs not that i am a scholar.I find some of the goverment departments are pretty bad for that .Many years ago when i went to the Pensions department about my war pension i ask to see someone so a guy came out hewould be about in his mid twentys he had papers in front of him and ha ask me what war was i in i looked at him ( he had all my history in the papers he had )i just felt saying the Boer war

My 28 y o grandson joined the Australian army 18 months ago and is training hard for who knows what. He was home for Christmas and what a real man I was very proud to see. I look around and wish that there was conscription and identity cards at least.
