Week from hell
Without trivialising those members with major health concerns at this time, for all those who think they have a hard life, this is what has happened to me in the last 7 days
Diagnosed high cholesterol ~ stress induced.
Blood pressure medication not working sufficiently ~ stress induced.
Three more teeth removed by vicious bitch with an insane grin on her face.
Daughter in midnight "blue and twos" dash 15 miles to Bristol Children's hospital with acute abdominal migraine.
Advised the landlord wants his house back in 3 months so have to move for 3rd time in 5 years!!
The dog that still bites me given half a chance.
5 frogs brought in by the bloody cat.
All this in addition to my full time carer's role looking after my wife with her M.E. plus now she has a prolapsed disc from a fall.
To cap it all the f'ing washing machine has now packed in with lights flashing like its Christmas.
Welcome to my world
My only sanity: reading about unwelcome neighbours, unionisation, the idiots running the government, repetitive jokes, immigration and a 101 other moans!!
What happened to all the good stuff on site like stories of when we were at sea?

Cheer up Tony, dont they always say things can only get better ! Certainly hope so in you case mate !
I had a great bit of news all due to your great site this very morning. Jimmy Yates posted his crew list today and low & behold an old shipmate for me from 53 years ago....... Thats great news for me and overcomes all the other bits, health etc like yours. Dug around in my drawers and even found a photo of me Jimmy and three other stewards on boat deck of Cunards ALSATIA way back then,
Wish you and your family speedy relief from your problems and hope better times are on the horizon,
Stuart

I know about that moving caper in our first Years of Marriage, but thank goodness we thought about the waste of Money paying rent for Years!
Just making someone else rich!
Far better off buying ones own place! A big bind and a long road ahaed, but in the end ite well worth it!
We are now for many Years out of House debt etc!
As said Tont really hope things get better, well cant get any worse by the sound of it all!?
Cheers

Tony first and foremost, I sincerely hope things improve for you and I wish you and your family well.
As to when we were at sea, racking the brains, what's left of them, to recall some instances of fun, but guess it's too late at night. But on a nautical theme anyone who thinks that stabilisers were a post war invention, have just been reading a 1909 edition of 'Manual of Seamanship' to satisfy something that had been niggling at me, and now I can't remember what it was, however came across the following
' Sir John Thorneycroft in the steam yacht "Cecille" fitted a weight actuated by hydraulic means, by which it automatically moved across the ship from side to side in such a direction as to decrease the rolling. Good results were obtained, but the apparatus has apparently not been fitted to any other ship."
Another man Herr Schlick fitted a huge gyroscope in the hold of a ship to prevent rolling, excellent results were obtained in an ex motor torpedo boat, but not considered commercially viable as too much cargo space used, but was later used in some German naval vessels
So know it doesn't help your situation at all but just a bit of maritime knowledge to get us back on a seamens tales' track

So sorry to here of your problems Tony
The wheel always Turns, you are down then you are up. so look forward to some good luck soon.
I have written about some of my voyages to be entertaining, I am sure many of us could do the same. I am sure not every voyage was boring, we all must have had some adventures so lets all do some more writing of our trips to cheer up Tony.
Cheers
Brian

I did buy my own house and owned it for many years until the Official Receiver "stole" it when I went bankrupt in 2000. Never again will I be put in the position of losing my house and home.

Stabilizers
Have never sailed as a member of the crew on a ship with stabilizers. However would have thought the original idea came from the Bilge Keels or sometimes known as rolling chocks fitted many many years on ships before the advent of modern stabilizers. Cheers John Sabourn
