Lots of complaints here in the South of a foul smell, now its been told, its from a chemical plant in Northern France!!!, thankfully its not their nuclear reactor on Cap Le hague. It has been said here that if they did have a nuclear reactor leak it would sweep down on us, but at least we still have the pipework from PLUTO here on the island, we could link it up to our sewage plants, and give something back!!!! PLUTO pipe line under the ocean. many people thought it a myth but i was told that they actually used it on one occasion.
as regards the smell its probably all those onions they used to sell us, now going rotten. probably some idiot from brussels has banned their bikes.

Yes, they certainly did use Pluto, to supply fuel oil after the D Day invation of Europe. I could think of a number of things to use it for to send back to France, but would be unprintable on this websight. T.G.

PLUTO, is a very interesting subject, they have a museum in Sandown and another in Shanklin. There were 3 sites i think, one in Kent and two on the IOW. Massive engineering project, oil and petrol was pumped way up in the north of england, down to these huge pumps at the 3 sites, several 4 inch pipes were laid across the English channel to the artificial harbour (mulberry) in France to supply the invasion force. An incredible achievement in the war years. Well worth a visit for anyone on the IOW, shows what could be done by the Brits when we put our mind to it KT

i know about the oil supplies for d-day but wasn't it originally designed to spray oil in the channel?. the pipes were laid into the channel near the dover area to set fire in case of invasion and i was told they actually used it to stop a small force of germans.
i also remember FIDO that dispersed fog on airfields.

Hi Alf,
I have not heard about it being used to spray oil, but in the museum they show a lot of old footage of the laying across the sSolent and the Chanel of these pipes, there were something like 14 large pumps at Shanklin and 4-5 in Sandown, not just one pipe , but several.My father-in-law was reserved occupation, and helped in the construction here on The Island. Each one of these pumps were massive. regards KT

There were two different systems Alf, the one with numerous supply pipes crossing the Channel for D-Day and the others were defense systems placed not only in Dover but at other major ports around the UK, remember reading about them in some of my periodicals, but cannot remember which ones. Must be on Wikipedia or Google somewhere. Ivan
