When the thought of an Identity Card was muted , and consulted on by the last Government and John Major's government before it , at ( Our ) great expense , I was initially against it . Then I thought , I have a Passport , a Driving Licence , a National Insurance card , Bus Pass , Blue Parking Badge , various other certificates , many with a photo , there are 70 Million people in the country The first three letters of Sirname and first lertter of my first name will give up almost 500,000 combinations that and a 4 digit number gives 4 billion alternate combinations , month and year of birth , should cover all the duplicated , so for J Smith you would have SMIJ-11-38-12345 , and that woukd then have an number that covered all eventualities , It wouold take five years to change over , but I woukd have thought the savings in Fraudulent passports , fraudulent claims , fraudulent identities would generate an income to pay for it .
I'll carry an ID card if it stops one Nigerian National claiming twice or one Somali refuge pretending he was born in Houndslow , The more I thought about it the more it made sense . It affects my Freedom , but the thieves who fiddle the system affect my income . I'll have a fingerprint or Bio-metric eye imprint done . I did not argue with Uncle Sam's Border Guards who after spending an age wondering why I would want to visit the USA demanded an electronic fingerprint before the Visa stamp hit my passport .
I have had a passport and a ( Now out of Date ) British Seamans Card since I was seventeen , They used to want to know where my distinguishing marks including tattoos where and what my occupation was , they no longer ask . I did not like the idea behind a DNA database , untill a retired Police Officer friend told me just how many unsolved crimes of even twenty or thirty years ago had been solved by the existance of the database so far , We have CCTV on every corner , and I lock my doors and set the alarms every time I go out , every time I go to bed , My parents sixty years ago never locked the door . I will accept the loss of freedom , because I have nothing to fear , except fear . I'll accept the loss of privacy to keep Britain safe . My fingerprint will stay on the USA's records , that won't affect my freedom unless I get hired as an international terrorist .
If I loose a little Freedom/Privacy/dignity so the door to Great Britain can be locked and I can leave my front door unlocked then it will be worth it . The Labour Party scrapped it in 1997 , David Blunkett reintroduced it in 2003 , scrapped by the coalition again last year Foreign nationals from outside the European Area , however, continue to require an ID card for use as a Resident's Permit under the provisions of the various acts about Boreders in 2007 and 2009 . Tony McNulty During a private seminar for the Socialist Fabian Society in August 2005, as the minister in charge of the scheme, stated 'perhaps in the past the government, in its enthusiasm, oversold the advantages of identity cards,' and that they 'did suggest, or at least implied, that they might well be a panacea for identity fraud, for benefit fraud, terrorism, entitlement and access to public services' . Me I do not see that , I see the scheme as being advantageous .

There have been a number of attempts to introduce a national identity card here in Oz, but each time the PC brigade along with the civil libetarians get it stopped. The majority of us have nothing to fear from it, but because it may cost votes it will not happen. Double dipping does go on but not too many cases. If you are in a defacto realtionship then it is treated the same as a married one. None of the two single payments, and defacto here will be seen as just staying for dinner.

Happy daze John in Oz.

England my England
Goodbye to my England, So long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's fine
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.
The French and the Germans may call themselves such
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say you're English ever again.
At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected. Staff do as they're told
They must not teach children about England of old.
Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils don't learn about them anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings , Arnhem or Mons ?
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.
We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away, over the sea
We're the English from England, let's all be proud
Stand up and be counted - Shout it out loud!
Let's tell our Government and Brussels too
We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue
Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack
Let the world know - WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!
If you are English, pass it on please.

John Sutton, your "England my England" post is the type of tripe that gives Scottish Nationalists like Alex Salmod credibility, I am a Scot and want to stay part of the Union.
Strange you post this, as you sit in Southern Spain
