    NUS Pension Fund

16 Comments by David mullins Published on 12th March 2022 08:21 AM
The following has been bugging me for some time, and I知 not sure if I知 100% right. So I would be most grateful if anyone has any solid information re the info below.

When I first went to sea as a 16 year old deck boy back in 1956, it was mandatory to be a member of the NUS (national union of seamen) and as such a monthly subscription was deducted from my wages.
If I知 not mistaken, a proportion of this subscription went into the union pension fund.
several years after retirement and looking through some old pay off slips I noticed the NUS deductions and being somewhat older and maybe a little wiser, I contacted the ministry of pensions enquiring about the pension which I had paid into for many years. I was informed that when the NUS was taken over by the TGWU the pension scheme was not transferred and was subsequently wound up.
Surely I must have something wrong here!

#10. No.4.personal effects 3 to 9 pounds , you must have been schooner rigged as well Des ? Hope you went for the upper figure if ever shipwrecked . The second engineer with me at a recent once again discussed tragedy gave my shoes standing in the alleyway to a survivor , so arrived back in port in my slippers. When he said to me put a value on them I wasn’t too worried so just said 5 pounds , that declaration caused me more bother than enough ,as others had also gave gear away .The second put the claims in much later the people we actually worked for had already received a number of months beforehand and when asked why they hadn’t distributed their excuse was they never asked us for it. What a miserable shower taking the bread and butter out of the mouths of their own employees . It takes other people to keep these so called keeper of others purse strings straight .JS.

Did hear that Two Jags used the funds during the 1966 strike, any truth or is that just another one of those stories.
But unlike Louis I know I got bugger all from it.

As with all pensions including State pension you have to pay in to get something back. In our case this means sea service, you have to have the required years of Merchant Navy employment to qualify for a pension.
Far too many seamen never gave a thought to pensions, we lived for the day and didn't think tomorrow would ever come, I include myself in this. There must be many other shipping companies like P&O who owe money to former seamen, they will never know if greedy shipowners pocketed their contributions.

William Hogarth the Union Baron during the 1966 strike must have dipped into the pot as well ?

Well John #13, that brings back memories, unwanted mothers fund.

Way back in the 50's and early 60's there was in Clapham south London a 'Naughty girls home'
In those days dad worked in a pig farm as well as being a dunny diver.
We collected waste food from there cooked up to feed the pigs, along with supplies from many other sources.

The girls in there were all happy with their lot, many kept the babies, some loaned them out, others said good bye to them.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Many were fed up with the names, John One, John Two, John Three, and so on, so they gave them away.
