Tom, I was a bell boy on the Windsor in the tourist gallop around the same time.
Not sue what the pay was but thought it a bit better than that.
Called Bell boys but acted as wingers assistants.

Can't remember the pay as a Siemens R/O - anyone know? I do remember I could only draw £8 a month from the Captain at sea - so you had to take money with you - permanently broke!

I am now looking at a letter from British Tanker Co dated Feb 1956 which states I have been accepted as a junior engineer and that I have to make my way to Newcastle to to join the British Commander on the Tyne. The rate of pay when I join the ship will be £34-5s-3d per month.

The ship was in dry dock and on my second day aboard the vessel another engineer and myself were instructed to go down to the bottom of the dry dock. Reason for this we had to go underneath the ship to make sure all the pump suction inlets were clear of barnacles and the likes.
I could never do that now as I would be scared the ship was going to break loose and come down on top of us.

Hi to all, I have all my pay-off slips from my time at sea and I can tell you the wages per month from 1958.
1958 Deck Boy = £13-12-6p 1959 J.O.S. = £21-7-6p 1960 S.O.S. = £26-17-6p 1961 E.D.H. = £37-1O-0p 1962 A.B. = £41-00-0p

I served 6 years deep-sea with 26 years on the ferries follwing my wedding. Great days back then.

joined the american oil industry in 1964 at 100 quid a month plus 9 days a month vacation with pay plus a 8 pound daily Perdieum

moved to Texas in 1989

stayed in the oil industry in Houston Texas until i retired in 2014 at the ripe old age of 72
