    Question City of Ottawa?

    Hello to all,
There will most probably be no one out there who would remember me or my husband Roger Davies? 2nd Engineer.
Sadly he died after an accident on board whilst I was with him, we were berthed in Calcutta at the time.
It is a long time ago now, but everyone who met Roger or his twin brother John liked them both a lot.
Just occasionally I wonder who I sailed with at that time. George Dundas from Glasgow was on his first trip to sea. He meets up occasionaly with my family. One wonderful wife Betty, Sams wife came back to the UK with me. I never thanked her for that act of kindness and I remember it so well...
I was with Roger on a few Ellerman ships..I was then called Jane Davies...
My days at sea were wonderful and I met a lot of very amazing people. I never really left the sea, I live in a remote part of the world, the Hebrides and overlook the sea...
    Kind regards, Jane

    Default City of Ottawa

    Hii Jane
I remember you- I am George Armstrong C/E who sailed with you on the City of Ottawa.
How could I forget? it was a very emotional trip.
It is a long time ago now 36 years I make it.
I can remenber most of the faces onboard but the names fail me.
A few names you may recall- Jimmy Brew 3/Eng,Jim Morrison 3/Eng & wife Margaret?
    ? Nixon J/ E.
I remember George Dundas he was a quite a character please give him my regards when you
    next see him.
I stayed with Ellermans until they made everyone redundent in1985.Then transferred to Denholms,
who then manned Ellerman ships, and stayed with them until retiring in 1999.
I see you now live in the Hebrides.
We moved up to Scotland back to my wife Annes home village Glencoe ,in the mid 90s.
but missed the grandchildren too much so moved back to Hartlepool after two years.
I often think back to that voyage on the City of Ottawa,Canada up the Great Lakes ,South Africa
then on to Shri Lanka and India to that sad day in Calcutta.
I have thought of you often and hope you are well and happy.
    Kind regards George

    Default From Jane

Hello it is me again George...
I was just reflecting and today I just want to say thank you for your reply. How had I forgotten that you were C/E I don't know..21st July 1975 is firmly fixed in my brain.
You and Anne were only, well nearly only down the road in Glencoe. I live on the Isle of Skye. It has been my home now for the last 22 years. I went back to social work and I am still in it I work with critical care clients and blind/deaf clients also.I couldn't face going into my nursing career again. It is so kind of you to think of me and I shared that with my husband Michael, he was quite touched by that. After my mothers death 8 years ago we cleared the house and found so many letters sent home from me. They are very comical indeed!!! A totally different lifestyle. It must have been quite strange retiring from a life on the waves?

It is strange and I hope you and Anne have the same malady...it is called 'peter pan syndrome'...that means that your biological and psychological clock says' I am 21'... it is a long lasting malady and grand children actually age faster than you do...so today I am 21 all over again!!! Do not visit the Doctor with this malady, the cure is dreadful I am told.... Alas...I have a piece of paper that says I have a 'big birthday pending'..60? Lies, all lies

George it has been very theraputic receiving your email and I am very greateful.
Please give our regards to your wife and know you have done a very good deed by acknowledging my mail. I did not think I would get any replies, so that was nice surprise George. I put my home email in my last post as I really cannot work out this system and I am missing mails...feel free to use it. However I know how busy life can get, so do not worry at all if you are not able!
    Kind regards, Jane
