While I am not able to help with any further research I can say that Freeport seems to have been a busy place during WW2. My wifes grandfather was a carpenter on the Armed merchant cruiser Dunnottar Castle and from 1940 to 1942 it went from the UK to Freetown on seven occasions.
Below is a picture of Freetown that he had from that time and a Xmas card from the Dunnottar Castle.

My father was in the RAF during the war; he was stationed at Freetown for 2 / 3 years on an anti submarine base.

Nice old Pic of the Dunnottar Castle there , that was my first Ship of course a lot later!
Sailed out of Cape Town her in 1958 great Memories!

Well sorry that i could not find any info on him, but was looking of course for Merchant Navy, which i now see by the post from Hugh , he was with the RN.
