Read somewhere that the new Queen uses one gallon of fuel to move forward by six inches. But most of the floating appartment blocks are now electric powered. The fuel is used to run a generator which produces the electric power for all the ships needs including turning the props.

Vernon I think the next stage will be to have more ships such as 'The World' Basicaly floating homes where people can live, maybe even work from, and just travel. Cruising is now the worlds largest and fastest growing recreation industry. The people of today are now just begining to find out what we all knew years ago, there is something special about the sea and being on it.

Default Trying to contact Bert's family

Hello - I know this is a long shot but I am Bert Forrest's step grandson, Bruce McDonald and I am trying to contact Bert's other stepsgrandson Gordon Stevenson (or Stephenson) who is Jessie McDonald's son. Not sure if you know of anyone that knew Bert Forrest well but my dad recently passed away and I am trying to find Bert's Step daughter, Jessie and/or her son Gordon. Well, if you know of anyone that might be the start of a search for me. Ok many thanks Bruce McDonald.

The two catering people in the Southampton shore office in 1958-1965 were a Mr Joyson and a mr Rowe his son was at sea and became a ships writer i think on the Caronia they had an office by Ocean Terminal upstair in an old green building as well as on Canute road.

I worked for Cunard in 1954 and then for a couple of years after that. I remember the character in the Cunard building in a large office in the basement. He always shook your hand as you entered. I realised later this was how he recognised a mason.I had a pal, Tunna his surname. who landed a lounge job on one of the Queens because he was a mason? I served on the Media as a boy catering rating then joined the Caronia for the 1955 world cruise plus the North Cape , Caribbean and Med cruises. In 1956 I was on the Brittanic. Gracie Fields sang for us in the Pig.

    Fuel Consupmtion

    Propulsion only

1 lb per S.H.P. (Ship Horse Power) -per Hr

    = 0.696 lb

PS I agree with the Capt and Gulliver,so how does the above work out!

I worked out at that rate for a 10Day Trip (eg) it would only use 168lbs!

Not quite right i would say!
Possibly someone could explain this to me !

Just came across this post so apologies for any delay.
S.H.P. will be short for Shaft Horse Power, so if the vessel was twin screw then you would have to double your figures for consumption.
S.H.P. is the measure used on steam turbine driven vessels to measure the power output of the turbines, you have to be aware that the reverse turbine would have a far lower S.H.P.
On motor ships the main engine power is measured in B.H.P. (Brake horse power) .
Actual fuel consumption will vary due to many factors but turbine driven steamships consumption given by the manufacturers will be at the normal operating speed of the turbine which is not necessarily the maximum speed at which the turbine is capable of operating at.
The B.H.P. quoted for a diesel engine is the figure when the engine is operating at 95% M.C.R. (maximum continuous rating) which is the limit at which the engine can safely operate at the maximum load that is put on the engine and, like S.H.P., this load will vary due to various factors, weather, draft, etc. The figures are arrived at during sea trials and can then be extrapolated for different conditions of loading (draft)
