My first ship as a cadet was the Trewidden in 1960 Capt.Oliver London to Tampa for bauxite to Japan the Kiwi for wool to Hull. Second ship was the Trevose, a real old lady (3 cylinder doxford) crossing the Pacific allowed one bucket of water each for washing per day. Potatoes stuffed in the scuppers to catch any rain water.Stayed with the group until leaving the Strathdevon as mate to join the cargo department.

Re: Haines Steamship Company
Hi Ian.
I started my sea time as deck boy on the Trevose joined in July 1949 stayed on her until 6 March 1951, four trips all to Australia, but by many ports on the way. The captain was D Spencer, the best skipper i sailed with, wanted me to train with the cadets for my tickets, my schooling was too poor, but he was always the gentleman. I ended up on the NZ coast for six years great times.
Hope you enjoy the posts on here and join in with tales of the times you were at sea.
cheers Des
