Mauretania- HS Knight
My grandfather, Henry Stuart Knight (most commonly known as Stuart), spent some time sailing with Cunard before rejoining Canadian Pacific. However I have been unable to find a record of his ships, although I am told that the Mauretania was one of them. Looking at his service record (below) I can only guess that his Cunard experience was at some stage between 1919 and 1930, but I've drawn a blank, both with dates and ships. Any ideas?
Thank you in advance

NB There are NO organised service records of ordinary merchant seamen who served between1857 and 1913.
Index cards in CR1 CR2 for 1913-1920 have been destroyed, but there is a separate index covering part of that period (CR10).

BT349 - Register of Seamen Central Index, Alphabetical Series (CR1) 1921-1941.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...4&CATREF=BT349
Cards arranged alphabetically by surname. You should find name, place, date of birth, capacity, brief description and sometimes a photograph.
Fourth Register of Seamen 1913-1941 (Central Index Register)
If a man served between 1913 and 1940 his details were recorded in the CIR, also known as the Fourth Register of Seamen. Surviving records have been transferred to the Public Record Office from the Registry of Shipping and Seamen. The records are filed in a card index, now viewed on microfiche. There are several series of cards within this series (CR1, CR2, CR10), each compiled slightly differently and comprising slightly different information. You should be able to find discharge number, vessels noted (normally by o.n. only), a physical description, sometimes a photograph.
Hope this may assist!
Cheers

Queen of Cambria
Hi,
According to my grandfather's Discharge Book, he was aboard The Queen of Cambria from 4/3/1901 to 11/6/1902 on it's voyage from Caernarvon - Dunkirk - Australia.
Although he would have been aboard the ship for the 1901 census, I have been unable to find any record of him (John Davies Williams of Aberdyfi/Aberdovey 1881-1964) or the ship in that year.
As you mention your grandfather serving aboard the Queen of Cambria, I wonder if you might have some information about the ship.
Regards,
Phil.
