KeithThe Lofts get bigger and uglier, I wonder if their clientel have no idea of the aesthetics of ships in the hay day of shipping or if they care ?. I do wonder if the rush to use LNG as fuel for its cleanliness compared to hydro carbons is safe ???

Yes as i have said before on such Liners, not my cuppa, they are to me just Floating Hotels and too Crowded for real pleasure!

But then each to his/Her won they say, and something must be good about them ,as they seem to be packed all the time. Actual Gold Mines i guess!

We often go on a cruise, but those big ones don't look like a cruise to me. I like relaxing, not boogying all day and night. Same with sitting in the sunshine, the bigger they are, the less space there is in deck. Elbow to elbow in not relaxing for me. The Oriana was my favourite, but she's gone to China now. I like to feel a boat and hear it.

The older Ships were the best, and i can vouch for them, as although i worked on the old ones with UCL, i also funnily had the pleasure to actually Travel as a sort of Passenger Style on the Athlone Castle going back to Cape Town.
Gee it was so nice to just relax and do the small things in life that makes ones day!

It was 14 days of sheer Bliss, with being served , i felt like a King, and then actually watched and saw just how hard the Catering Staff worked.

When you are doing the duties yourself, dont seem to notice all that is done, as its like ones second nature!

But as said Yes, the older Ships were the best!! As you say you could hear, and feel them that lovely Engine Drone, and the gentle Roll on the Oceans !

I don't know about ships with stabilisers, but what i loved was that steady roll which the ship took, and seemed to epitomised what being at sea was all about, if only one more time, on a real ship. who knows, we have nostalgic steam trains etc, maybe someone one day will do real ship passages, count me in on one of those.

Well Keith, you could have nostalgia on one of these. It would be my choice if went cruising.

#6 sounds like you prefer to hear the wind in the rigging rather than the frigging Johnny , sailing ships may be the way to go. My little experience with such was sailing the Leeuwin and also a few shots in a Ships lifeboat with a standing lug and jib. For peace and silence nothing can beat it. Silence is golden is so well adaptable to such. As for power driven vessels the only thing that would wake me up was the stopping of such , and some of the old bangers getting to sleep was the problem and was lying awake waiting for such to happen.
