    Default Beirut Blast

Don't know if this has been posted, but 4 months on from the blast in Beirut caused by fertilisers stored in the harbour, but this is a short clip from the capsized cruise ship in the harbour, kt

Keith, I for one had been unaware of the Orient Queens disaster. I do not know if I was half asleep when the tragedy happened but have no recollection of the ship being mentioned at the time. It is 4 months since the blast occurred and having just done a quick search of the web to see what progress is being made when it comes to blaming and shaming etc. There appears to be very little, The usual pointing of fingers and tut tutting and various companies suing each other seems to be about it. The people who stored the fertilisers have disappeared leaving the survivors to pick up the pieces as best they can. It never stops amazing Me how we quickly forget these disasters whether that is because of the 'Out of sight out of mind' reason or another disaster happens. Or maybe because there are more urgent things happening closer to home I do not know. Without posts like this I would be blissfully unaware of a lot of things that go on in the world as they seem to get buried in the small ink and back pages of the media, So thanks for the post.

At the time of the blast there was great indignation by all and sundry in Beirut (and elsewhere), and investigations were going to be held about laxity and corruption, including the role of the judiciary for issuing safety and permission licences for the storage etc. However true to form in the near and middle east a lot has been swept under the carpet and piles of money will no doubt have changed hands and at the time of issuance of said certificates the authorised persons will magically have been out of the country. Internal unrest, either real or manufactured, will divert attention from the incident and it will be forgotten. Western countries will provide funds to rebuild the port and infrastructure, but Beirut will eventually become a Russian or perhaps even a Chinese naval base, as the Chinese are hardly likely to let an opportunity like this slip through their fingers..

    HI Keith.
Couldn't get you vid to work, but surprisingly it was on our TV a few days ago, a woman owned the ship and she was saying it is disgraceful that no one as yet has been held responsible, I believe one of the crew has not yet been fond. As Ivan's comment that; maybe the Chinese or Russian's will move in, at one time Beirut came under the influence of France but they seem uninterested, so I'm sure the poor people of Beirut would welcome anyone to clean the place up. They can't be any worse that the mob running it now.

Big article on our TV last night about the blast and where things are at now.
No mention or showing of the ship, but the man with the leg in the video was shown.

It will take many a long year for all of this to be resolved.

Not much of a queen now, more like a wreck on the beach.
You may recall such after a heavy night and ending up on one.

The main thing is for people to learn to draw conclusions from doing the wrong thing.

An Interpol arrest warrant has been issued for the captain and the owner of the vessel that caused the explosion.
