Yet again an MSC ship, I am glad I am not there underwriter. Seriously folks WHAT is going on with this company. They seriously do need investigating. Have they or do they not do the old let's test the engines astern trick before entering port? I hope there were no injuries on the vessel they rammed.

Yes MCS and Viking do appear to be doing it hard theses days.
But to say engine failure was the problem is a bit rich considering the manner in which ships engines work now.
Viking used the same excuse, bit of a lame one for me!

With "everything" on these vessels nowadays being controlled by computer, "engine failure" can happen at any time and has nothing to do with "testing the gear".
Despite all the flak being thrown around by the media and other "uninformed" sources, the man who probably came nearest to having a heart attack was most likely the unfortunate master who suddenly found himself powerless. Having said that, it does appear from available footage that she may have been aptroaching a tad too fast.
Think I might also have yelled "Let go both anchors". The footage also showed that there was power to the thrusters but they were not having a lot of effect due to the speed.
I was quite recently spent a couple of weeks on board a larger MSC cruise ship and the power produced fore and aft by the triple thruster units is quite something

From the video it appears the anchors had already been let-go, as you can see the port anchor chain leading astern.
Once the way is on these ships circa 150,000 tonnes they are a beast to come to a stop if bereft of power.
And as for the lady shouting 'How the hell did that happen' I can imagine the Master said something similar in seamen's language sometime earlier.

Sorry cannot agree with a lot in your post. There is a manual over ride readily available, now depending on how well the engineers are trained on how to use it may well be a different matter. These systems are or should be tested as part of ships routine PM's, either monthly or quarterly, Also testing the gear as in testing the engines ahead and astern before leaving port was always obligatory on any ship I ever sailed on or company I worked for. Also it was obligatory to test the engines astern before entering port. No doubt she was in Bridge control mode, if the engines were not responding as required a phone call to the ECR was an action that should have been carried out immediately when the Master knew he had a problem. MSC have been in the news at least three times in the last few weeks. Two of their cruise decided to have a coming together in May this year. Only last week they had an emergency in the port of Liverpool when one of their Box boats took a severe list resulting in the crew being taken off in a hurry.
