Yes, I was at radio college during 1957, getting my ticket in early 58.
The auto alarm was a brilliant invention, but a bloody nuisance at times. Crossing the Pacific was a nightmare insofar as electrical storms and the associated static were concerned. There were frequent false alarms set off by static which would manage to effectively fool the auto alarm receiver's timing filter.
Ah yes, the Salvita lifeboat radio. Like a miniature yellow post box, the handles of which (the generator) had to be operated by some luckless deck hand.
