Re: Alf Corbyn
Brian don't know if Alf was religious or not, but regardless of whether or not, will be entitled to climb the real Jacobs ladder. May even do a few running repairs on his way up just to keep his hand in. Was an outspoken and honest seaman on here and wherever he finishes up will be the same. Most of us on here have lived a somewhat different lifestyle than the norm and Alf was no exception. He goes with all our blessings. Are you still in your holiday home? and is there any signs of activity in the fishing there. Cheers JS

Re: Alf Corbyn
Today, having just learned the news concerning our mate, Alf, it is with sadness that I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Alf, but always enjoyed his 'chirpy' contributions to this forum, never boring, always talking of life as it really was. Occasionally, I shared with him memories of a time spent in and around Enfield and Cheshunt (an area to the immediate north of London with which we were both very familiar). Talk of places and pubs, like the New River Arms at Wormley where, for a time, between ships, Alf had worked as a barman. On Saturday nights, in the Lounge Bar, it was where Alf was kept busy serving the thirsty 'singalong' crowd who gathered to hear the honky-tonk piano player and where I struggled to reignite a 'doomed' romance. In recent years, due to failing health, his comments ceased and he was greatly missed by all. Like many others (courtesy of Doc Vernon) I was also on the receiving end of his kindness. The MN sticker on my car windscreen will now have added meaning for me.
On Thursday I shall raise a glass to your memory, old shipmate. Fair Winds and calm seas.
....Roger

Re: Alf Corbyn
Paul Hingston the Welfare Officer for Fisherman's Mission for Alf's area went to Alf's funeral. He also arranged for a Standard-Bearer from the Merchant Navy Association to attend with the Red Ensign. Paul very kindly visited Alf on several occasions whilst in the nursing home and conversed often with Anne and her daughter. He also offered lifts. A good man indeed.
