Captain Brook Johnson
George Brook Johnson
With regret, I have to advise that George Brook Johnson died on 6th February 2016 in Brisbane.
He wasn’t a member of your Association but would have been known to some members.
I sailed with him on Rangitoto in 1961 when he was one of the third mates.
Regards
Mike Davis

NZSCo Association
His colleague David Holmes writes as follows:-
I regret to inform you that Captain Brook Johnson sadly passed away on Saturday evening, 6 February, in Brisbane. Brook is survived by his wife Anne, a son and daughter and grandchildren. After pre-sea training at Warsash, Brook commenced his apprenticeship in 1958 on the Otaio and continued with the Company until 1966, serving on the Rangitoto, Papanui and Otaki. After a short spell in the UK/Europe trade, Brook became a sales representative for marine equipment. In 1970, Brook decided to resume his sea-going career, joining the Vasco da Gama (H. C. Sleigh) in Darwin. Brook then brought his family out to Australia and they settled in Brisbane. He subsequently worked for a number of companies on the Australian coast and in the off-shore sector, where he served as Master. In the mid-1990s, Brook took command of a cruise ship based in Singapore and continued there until his retirement from sea-going in 2006. Brook was a regular attendee at the Brisbane lunches of the Durham Association. Brook’s hobby was writing and he self-published a very readable autobiography of his life at sea ‘A Life on the Oceans’ Waves’ and a novel ‘The Family Business”.
Brook was a delightful character, a true down to earth Yorkshire lad with a great sense of humour. He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
