Royal marine Frank Brookes
Just heard the sad news this morning of the passing of Frank Brookes, aged 95, one of the 414 survivors of the sinking of the Royal Oak in Scapa Flow. I would think he would be one of the last ones. Frank went on to serve in the MN on the Cunard Queens until his retirement at 65, he was a steward on both the Mary and the Lizzy, and also QE2. KT

Re: Royal marine Frank Brookes
I was in a small boat owned by the local lads in Scapa, we rowed out and stopped over the Royal Oak which is quite visible under water. there are still 800 men inside of her. I guess Frank was one of the lucky ones who got away. I believe the balls of flames shot down all the alleyways and trapped most of the men.
Oil was still leaking out of her.
This was in 1982.
Very Reminiscent of the Arizona in Pearl Harbour.
RIP Frank
Brian
