Captain Richard S Webster
WEBSTER Richard Samuel (Captain MN Commander RNZNR) Passed away peacefully on the 4th October 2015 after a short illness.
Loved husband and best friend of Barbara, loved father of Jane, Ian and Tim.
Much loved Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.
Captain Richard Samuel Webster won a scholarship, awarded by the Company, while a student at Waitaki Boys High School in 1941
He spent two years aboard the Training Ship HMS Worcester at Greenhithe. He then served in numerous NZS ships reaching the rank of Master.
He was appointed as Assistant Marine Superintendent in Christchurch in 1964 and eventually was transferred to Wellington as Marine Superintendent.
In 1973 he transferred to the Auckland office as Manager.
He joined the Shipping Corporation of NZ in 1975 and was with them until 1985.
He continued to find employment in the shipping world as Master on a number of delivery jobs. He sailed with Peter Blake, in Lion New Zealand, from NZ to Panama.
He achieved the rank of Commander with the NZ Naval Reserve, specialising in Hydrography particularly with HMNZS Lachlan.
I first met him when I was on board Surrey and Dick joined as Master on a trip from the UK to NZ in 1964. Part of my education was learning how to cope with Dick on the deck tennis court on No 3 Hatch.
A fierce opponent! I later worked with him as Bill Newson’s ‘Gofer` in the Wellington Head Office.
A man of forthright views and great company.
He is survived by his wife Barbara and three children.
