was that the one they called the banana boat, built on tyne in two halfs then welded together but cocked up the job, resulted in banana shape

Must have been more than one John, cause growing up in Glasgow in the 1960's anyone spouting flannel would hear ''do you think I came up the Clyde on a banana boat'' [oops sorry Ivan, heh heh] which being knee high thought I'd like to go on that.

Been up there a few times Marian for Banana Boat replace with Ore Carrier a trip up the River as far as General Terminus and that’s as far as you got , unless you were on a Tyne Flat Iron to get under the bridge. For a foreign holiday you had the choice of a further taxi trip up Sauchialle street to the 101 night club , or putting on your life jacket and making the 150 feet trip over the river on the wire hauled ferry to Betty’s Bar. Both experiences of different extremes . We had a stowaway once from there luckily we were going down to Liverpool , if had been going foreign she may have finished up swimming , to save on the paperwork , someone must have payed her train fare back to Glasgow from Liverpool. Cheers JS
