I got mine in Cardiff, 6 weeks after joining my first ship in Immingham. Presume that was because they had no facilities there to sign me on! At least,my book has the correct date I started!

Don, did you ever meet our ex-Siemens technician for the Bristol Channel area, Frankie Bray? He was at Marconi's Avonmouth depot when I came ashore in April 1978. He retired two years later, and has since died.

Hi Don, I was with Siemens from May 1953 to December 1960 when I decided to come ashore. 1st ship was "British Empress" other BP ships were "British Liberty" "British Zeal" "British Merchant" . In between times I sailed on two Liberty Ships with Ellermans then did a spell of relieving and finally did 6 months on "Sugar Exporter" before deciding to come ashore. I found Siemens were a generous employer -good leave spells and granted various requests along the way. In all I served on 17 ships. John Hackett

    Hi Don,
Well its taken 60 years, but we meet again! I was the R/O on British Lantern that you relieved in Milford Haven 15th June 1961, so long ago. Cant say I have any memory of it, I'm 80 yrs old now. I had been Marconi R/O on old 1943 Br Dragoon in 1959 when BP first started to take their own men.( my first ship on my own) What a relief. BP were such good employers after the parsimony of Marconi. Did the first guarantee drydock on the Lantern that spring in Trieste. Lovely ship. Followed up on the Br Energy, Br Soldier and Br Faith before calling it a day for the first time in 1964, Kept coming back to sea time after time. Couldn't give it up, finished my days with Holland America line, (comms officer then) cruising with the rich and famous! retired in 2002. Nice to hear from you

Can any of you ex BP men help me. In 1958, I was R/0 on the Eagle Oil tanker, San Venancio, while at anchor in Balik Papan we were attacked by a fighter bomber, supposedly flown by Indonesian rebels. Missed us but hit a BP tanker a couple of cables off and put her on fire. Thankfully, all crew got off.
My memory was never great but at 81 is hen like and I cannot remember the BP tankers name.
Does this resonate with anyone out there?
