Aha, so you were with Siemens-AEI! You'll have heard what happened to the Royston Grange, as you were on other Houlders ships after. Such a tragedy, believe the were two R/O's killed. I asked my boss Tom Bradbury at Marconi Avonmouth depot what was the Siemens gear like. He answered "miserable-looking black stuff that sat there and glowered at you". Seems the little hoods on the meters reminded him of eyes staring at you! We had an ex-Siemens Technician working thee when I first came ashore, his name was Frank Bray, he retired about 1980, and has since died.

John I did my second trip on the Royston Grange/GFDU at the beginning of 1963 always remember her as one of the best vessels to have served on, stayed with AEI until Marconi took over when I had a difference of opinion with Padfield at the East Ham office, I did not want to join a BI pilgrim ship in the Persian Gulf so by by GTZM. Went with Tank Landing ships, then Cunard, then Lecturing at University of Ulster. Now retired 11 years. During summer vacations I went back to sea with. Marconi that's when I was on the Mable Warwick. As regards the AEI gear it was solid and reliable and the Auto Alarm did not have any moving parts like Marconi ones. At times I reflect back on my time as sea and cannot believe that was me but it has been over 50 years ago now. Best wishes
