    cannot recall john hand. there was so many ferries and watches.I sailed on the old kent.the Canterbury.the DOVER.AND THE ENDEAVOUR.AND RELIEVED ON OTHERS.

    Hi Brian, do you remember "Spud Murphey" on Oronsay ?
    He was an AB, and really helped me when I was a Deck boy & JOS on Oronsay in 1963.

    Hi Terry
    Sorry no , he lived with his sister in Charlton SE London.
    A bit stupid of me because there must be thousands of "Spud Murphey's" in the Merchant and Royal Navies, seems Murphey's automatic nickname was "Spud"
    A bit like my surname "Payne" nickname usually "Whacker" most used by Liverpool men. No idea why as I was very genteel. Believe that or not, (as a kid I was a Toe Rag from SE London).
    "Nicknames", could be a good starter thread from someone a bit more educated than me.
