Welcome Alexander. I note your location as Howick. Is this the close to Auckland one?

    Hello Kent,
My Howick is in South Africa, approximately 130 km inland from the port of Durban.

    Hi! ken
My first visit to N.Z. Auckland, early '61. A very good Mate and Wife,of mine, from Childhood day's ,in the Village .
Picked me up ,from the Strathnaver . They'd recently ,bought a House ,at the newly developing Howick. 44 Angelo street. Their highlight to relate, was couple weeks earlier ,invited a Group of soldiers from a Welsh Regt. ,on a Course out there,To a Housewarming Party. A Army truck, load arrived .
Consequent couple trips , with the Strathmore, arranged his work schedule .to drive down to Wellington.
Kiwi's ,over here , tell me, it's now better known As Chow-ic

Hi Alexander. Great to hear from you. Sorry about my lack of geographic knowledge as I was unaware of your Howick in SA. Durban is a different story as I have favourable memories of visits there while on Union Castle and Ellerman ships. My wife is from East London and she had an aunt at Durban who always made me most welcome on stopovers at Durban in the 1950's. Being English, Durban saw my first experience of anyone ringing a table handbell for the 'Girl" to bring the next course and clear the dishes from the previous one. I recall being embarrassed at the time and probably would be more so now. After marriage I had an offer of a job on Durban docks though decided against moving out there. Probably was one of my better decisions in view of the changes in the city. Shifted to NZ much later - 1964.

I too remember the developing Howick near Auckland. No longer developing as there are houses all the way through where cattle used to graze so Howick is now an Auckland suburb. You are right about the name Chow-ic.
