Hi Katy.
Welcome to the site, hope you get some information for your friend, plenty of good researchers on site.
You put in Daniels details unknown dept, as a deck boy and senior ordinary seaman he would have been on deck.
His discharge book number is close to mine so it is possible he was at the Vindicatrix Sea School, if you have his discharge book look in page 5 where his Particulars of training courses will be it will be there, with the date.

Hi Katy.
The picture looks like when he was on the Largs Bay, as the naval hats were worn by the quartermasters on Passenger boats. I was in ports in Australia and NZ with the Largs Bay quite a few times back in the 50s and had the occasional drink with some of the crew while our ships were both in Melbourne. Keep looking in on site someone may come up with some info.

Hi Katy.
Daniel would have been on the Largs Bay in this picture as the naval hats are worn by Quarter masters while on the bridge steering.

Thanks for all your tips. I have some records being copied and sent to me from the guildhall of the routes his ships made.
His daughter has just told me it says Largs Bay on the back of the photo
