Hi. I was on the golfito in 1963 done 6 trips on her spent a month in hospital in Kingston after falling 90 ft while oiling the stays on the mainmast. I was on the Rfa olna in 1958 with the Royal Navy in the West Indies I think she was the sister ship of the Rfa olmeda. Well all the best. John phillips

    Hi Terry,
I joined as a deck boy but was immediately assigned the job of "Peggy" in the carpenter's mess. It wasn't what I expected to be doing and I felt like I was more like a steward. It had its perks though and I got to like it and the guys I was looking after. Being only on £23 a month I was glad of the extra cash I got in the way of tips when we got to port. I was only 5'3" and 7.5 stone when I signed on. Another perk was getting all my meals from the 1st class galley which helped me grow and gain weight. I was 5'9" and 3 stone heavier when I payed off. Of all the cruises I did this was my favourite and the 5 months on board seemed to fly by.

    Hi John.
You must have had a god on each shoulder, to have survived that. I was on a British Tanker in Port Pirie in South Aus when my mate fell 60 feet of the mainmast, thought he was a goner but he spent 9 months in hospital, ended up with one leg four inches shorter than the other.

Hi des when I came home after my accident I was off for 5mths and then rejoined the golfito while home I met my wife Jan we have been married 51yrs now and have two boys and 5 grandchildren. Another story you might like is me and a mate were taking a friend down to avonmouth to join the Camito the sister ship of the golfito as she was sailing that night we had a few pints and decided to stowaway on her I could have signed on her a few days before but thought what the hell. We sunbathed for a couple of days as part of the crew then we were cought got to Kingston locked up in central jail for 4 days only white blokes there then rejoined the Camino in port Antonio for home all the papers were at the docks in Southampton we were like film stars all the national papers printed our story ! Home from a party 5 weeks late!then in the local papers and we even went on television. That was in April 1962 l was 24 my mate 33. Quite a journey hey. Hope you enjoyed the story John phillips

    Hi John.
Though about ring-bolting on the Monawai from Auckland to Sydney when on the NZ coast, changed my mind in case they threw me out.
    Cheers Des
