    Hello Alison
Thank you for posting your Fathers details be it scarce.
Hope you may get some good info soon!
    Thanks

Note! (This is my father's information, his card type was CR2 and series BT348 trying to trace what ships and info on him)

I am a wee bit confused here Alison as if you have his CS2 Card that should show his Ships??
Or am I reading this the wrong way perhaps!
    Thank you

CR2 cards should show a list of the ships on which the seaman served, customarily by its Official Number. However, the clerks do not seem to have entered every change of ship and you may find that the record is incomplete and that some additional ship details may be recorded on the CR1 and CR10 cards

Not all CR2 cards show a list of ships by official number some are blank, some have omissions - most have omissions I would say.
Unfortunately his CR2 card is blank. So the only way to find out what ships he served in would be with the use of crew agreements and working backwards. A known ship's crew agreement will usually show the previous ship and so on. In this way crew agreements are a very useful aid for researchers.

He was born in 1912 and his first ship was probably PORT DUNEDIN. It is likely, given where his records are, that he didn't serve in the MN during WW2 although there were exceptions.

    Hugh
There are these Crew Lists listed at the Canadian Archives for dates shown for the Port Dunedin
so possibly the Lady can apply there to start!

Search results for Crew Lists in the Maritime History Archive
Types of Agreements and Accounts page provides an explanation for the codes referring to
the crew agreements held at the Maritime History Archive.

Would this be the correct Link for the Crew List at the NA as well Hugh!//

Alison, A different time perhaps but I was on the Port Dunedin in 1950. Here is the record in my discharge book and a photo of the Port Dunedin that I took in Lyttleton, New Zealand during that voyage.
    Good luck in your endeavours.

The links to the NA files are correct Vernon.

He joined PORT DUNEDIN in November, 1930 and would appear to still be there in Sept, 1931. His first issue Dis. A was in 1931 but he could have been on paper discharges on (H)ome (T)rade ships prior to this. I would always turn every stone when checking MN records so I would not rule out checking Canada. My thinking, however, is that this was his first (F)oreign (G)oing ship hence the blank CR2 card.

My Dad Samuel Rennie, I got all this information on him from the ancestors web site, I do not have any log books of his, and he was born and lived in Glasgow,Scotland. He also worked in the shipyards in the Clyde district after the Merchant Navy. I do not know when he was in the Merchant Navy, but I do remember him talking about going to New Zealand on the ship, I have old photos of ships that he has taken throughout his journeys and no name on any of them.

    Hi Alison
Think it best then that you start at the Canadian Archives,it may cost a we bit but if you really want to find out more then that's the price!
The N Archives is also there, and that too can be searched for Crew Lists!

Then as said from there it may take you to the Ships he was on!
    Good Luck!

As Hugh has said his CR2 is blank.
So more probing will be necessary!
His papers must be with the NA ??
    Cheers

This I hope is the correct Link to the CRS10 Documents which if his Papers still exist should be here!
This would show list of Ships etc! ?? Hopefully

Alison, a couple of coincidences. He was on the Port Dunedin when I was born in Sydney (NSW, not NS) in 1931. I was engineers steward and would have worked out of the same pantry for five months as he would have when he first signed on. Here is a link on the Port Dunedin. She was one of the oldies in my time such as the Port Hobart, Port Windham.Port Dunedin
